I prefer the 5" model 27-2 and the 6" Model 28-2 for casual target shooting. Full disclosure though, I have 27's and 28's with 3.5, 4, 5, 6, and 6.5 inch barrels. All are excellent shooters but the 5" and 6" get more range time.
I know...I know....the answer is both! But I'm on a budget. The 3.5 inch seems to be more desirable but the 5 inch just seems like it would balance better and handle the recoil better. Neither would be a carry/self defense type of revolver. Just for some target plinking and collecting. Thanks for any feedback.
It’s really just a matter of personal preference if you plan to carry, plink with it or keep it as a safe queen for an investment. In contrast to many others I just plain don’t like the 5” barrel length. I like the 3.5 and 4” lengths for handiness, looks and plinking. For holster carry in the outdoors for hunting the 6 an 6.5” is just right. The 5” to me is just an oddball size that doesn’t seem right for anything.
You stated you were on a budget, so another option would be to start with
a 4" Model 28, and go from there as funds allow, and you wont be sacrificing any "Cool Factor" either.
I have the same 27-2 5" in Blue in a wood case also and I believe it has not been fired other than at the factory test firedI agree with Jeff - whichever one you find first in the condition that you desire for a price that fits in your budget. You cannot go wrong with either the 3.5" or the 5". From my experience, the 5" ones are harder to find, but the 3.5" ones are more expensive. With that said, I love the 8 3/8" ones for plinking - they are a delight to shoot... all day long.
Here are a couple of 27-2s from the 1970s for your comparison...
