Would this gun come from ther factory like that? Seen at my local gettin place, it's a 4" super clean gun. Appears to have original grips. Appeared to be unfired, new in box ( and with holster ! ), very, very faint turn line on cylinder. Need help with info, they want $650 for it. Seems high, but I don't know. Didn't get pictures, but looks to be in nearly perfect shape. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Thought about that. Could be, I guess. Will try to get pictures within the week, if they still have it when I get back. maybe that will help. Was the dull finish factory, an option?

As I understand it, the Model 27 is basically the same as a Model 28, but it had a better finish. The 27 was polished and has a checkered topstrap. In an effort to make a lower priced revolver, Smith cut out some of the unnecessary finishing touches.

It could have come from the factory like that... anything is possible with S&W.

For an old guy like me, who remembers mod 28s selling for just north of $100, & mod 10s around $75 new, the current pricing on these "economy" model S&Ws is NUTZZ! I agree, that's most likely a 27 cylinder, or maybe a re-blue on just the cylinder.

So how would that affect pricing? I know pics would help, but the finish looks flawless, but almost like flat black, primer, or something else.Looked kinda goofy with the glossy cylinder. And $650?! Isn't that a hundred or two too high?

I'd be reluctant to pay half that for it. But, I'm probably not the best judge of value on HPs. I've never cared for any N-frame in a caliber that doesn't start with a "4".

4" n frames are rare in my parts.

I paid like $580 for my 28-2 that had Pachmyr Presentation grips, which actually work quite well, no box, no tools, no papers.

In terms of different finish on the cylinder, who the heck knows? The matte finish can look different on the barrel and the frame, so who knows?

If you like, it, it's worth grabbing. That price is not out of order. It's on the high end, but I very rarely see 4 inchers like I said earlier. In one year I have only seen one, and I put a down payment on it, and owned it 5 days later.

650 might be a bit high for a gun with a replaced cylinder, but if you are buying it strictly as a shooter and the gun is mechanically fine, and don't much care about collectability you will be hard pressed to find one for less any more. I recently had to recalibrate my nframe values.....

I've owned about a dozen 28s thru the years and I have always felt the description that the overall finish is "matte blue" is deceptive. Except for the edges of the frame, mine have always been what to me is more of a "low-luster" blue -- polished, but not nearly as much as the 27. And actually, that polish has varied from one example to the next, with a couple being close enough to a 27 polish that it was hard to distinguish from the 27 polish without a side-by-side comparison.

A replacement cylinder would reduce the collector interest in that gun and 28's have become quite collectable lately. I would pass on it at that price.

I'd also pass.Buy the right stuff, and not worry about it.Nice shape or not, something is a little fishy with that one. It's not some unique, special order, two finish Pinto.

Their is a reason why they made the model 28 a matte finish, so that cylinder is way out of place. If you can get the gun cheap, I would go for it and change the cylinder back to the 28 or you could have someone redo the cylinder that is in it now. If that does not bother you and you want a 4" N frame 357, then grab it. If it was me, I would try to negotiate a price to see if you can get it a little lower.

"Most likely somebody changed out the rear sight blade and put the front yellow insert in. But all sorts of weird and mismatched things came out of S&W factory. I bought this Model 28 new and it came with a high polish 27 cylinder." This post in response to my post about a Highway Patrolman was from a long time Smith & Wesson owner. A factory letter might tell you if the gun came from the factory with the high polish Mod. 27 cylinder.
