Well I picked up a model 29-3 6" blued with original numbered box and papers at a gunshow today. While at the show I looked the gun over well and it appeared to be pretty much perfect. I paid $650 for the gun but when I got it home and looked at it with a flashlight, I noticed that it has surface rust or freckling on the sideplate and some light rust on the inside of the action as seen when the hammer is cocked. The barrel and cylinder also look very purple/dark brownish in some spots when looked at under the bright light. This could not be distinguished under the "sellers" light of the gunshow, in regular incandescent lighting of my house, or even outside in my car for that matter because it was a rainy day. How badly did I get screwed, and how much can I expect to be able to salvage?

Every revolver I own that is blued will show some browning under intense light. My 29-5 also shows some purplish tone to the barrel and cylinder under bright light. I'd say you paid $75-$100 too much.

You dident pay too much, just a bit more, just a bit early! Take some four aught steel wool soaked in oil and give her a light rub down (not too hard or long), clean her up and enjoy.

I don't think you did bad at all.

I bought what I thought was a pristine Winchester 94 and couldn't find anything wrong in any kind of light...until I shined a 100 Lumen Surefire flashlight on the barrel as I was rummaging through the safe. Then all kinds of freckling showed up. I can still take it outside in broad daylight and not see a thing wrong today - even though I know it is there.

Clean your gun lightly with some Flitz and a soft cloth, then oil it and enjoy the living daylights out of that thing!!!

I have used the red plastic mesh that some oranges come in from the grocery store and WD 40 on very light rust thats just getting started, you can rub pretty hard with that stuff and not cause a problem. I should note that this was on rifle barrels. Jeff
