Model 29-5 ( update post #51)

Congrats on the 5" 29-5. The 29-6 has a slightly shorter rear sight unit and the screw is larger, going into one of the scope mounting holes instead of the small one that S&W have always had. Classic, Classic DX & Magna Classic 29-5 rear sights (& 629-3 are a one model thing and you may not be able to replace if lost.

Now I need to go look at my 629-3 classic vs my 629-4

On the 629-3 vs -4 also probably chromed hammer & trigger vs case colored. I have seen some that break that observation though.
On sights, big screw or small, short or long. They had a reason for changing the sight.

Wow, I never would have noticed the rear sight differences. Small screw on the 629-3.

My 629-4 has a flash chromed hammer and trigger though, it must have been a transition gun.

You know the funny thing is I know where there is a nice 629-3 classic for sale but it has a scope and mount on it. The first thing I would do is take the scope off that beautiful gun but I wouldn't have known the rear sight would be so hard to replace. Good thing I haven't pursued it.

You can make a rear sight for a 629-3 or 29-5 from an older rear sight with the square front on it. Shape it and then touch up the bare metal.
Wow, you're in Pittsburgh, Hi neighbor!!!

Don't know about the rest of them but my 6 1/2" 629-3 Classic is drilled & tapped for a scope mount from the factory. I think S&W put a little advanced technology (if that's what you call it) into the Classic line. They all seemed to be one step ahead of their standard lug brothers.

Congrats on your new purchase. If you like your .44 magnum as much as I do mine, you will be well pleased. I don't want to hijack the thread but I do have a quick question. I am guessing that the rubber grips shown in the images came with the guns. I would like to have a set of those rubber grips that don't cover the S&W logo on the right side. All I can find are the regular Hogues with that huge rubber flap on the right grip with Hogue inscribed on it that does cover the logo. Any ideas where I can purchase a pair for a 29-10 square butt?

Thanks!
They're out there. I've seen a couple on the big auction site just recently.

I knew you'd find you a 29 and man o man you found a nice one! I've been staying away from GB lately because of my lack of willpower & I guess (?) I'm glad I have been or I'd probably been bidding against you for that one! The 29 Classics just never made it into my 44 collection. :( That one will be good shooting fun at the range. Let us know how it does for you & make sure to post the dirty pics. :D
Congrats buddy!

Quite frankly I thought it would take a bit longer than it did to find this model. I got outbid on two others that I tried for a few weeks ago and then nothing. Until last week when this one showed up. Bidding was pretty mild on it. I expected it to be hot and heavy towards the end as there were a doz. other bidders, but when the smoke cleared I got it and for a decent price too! Go figure eh? Anyways, I'm looking forward to getting it out to the range to see what she'll do with that Fastfire sight on it. Hopefully if all goes well I'll be able to pick it up late next week.

I looked at the difference in the sights between my 629-3 Classic and my 29-6 Classic and the one thing I noticed between the 2 is that the 629-3 Classic sight is longer than the 29-6 Classic sight and has an extra hole drilled in the top strap for the sight screw, basically right under the forcing cone. The 29-6 uses the front scope mount hole instead of having a separate hole drilled and tapped for mounting the rear sight. I didn't check it out because I didn't want to mess with the sights on my 629 Classic, but I am thinking that the front scope mount hole in the top strap is in the same place on the top strap as the rear sight mounting hole for the sight on my 29-6 Classic. So you could actually mount the rear sight of a 29-6 or 629-4 or later on your 29-5 or 629-3 Classic, but you would have a bare spot in the top strap showing in front of the sight.

Well, there is a lot of mention here about 629's. Something i do not know much about. Below is a 629 no dash NIB with Culina Exhibition Black and withe ebony exhibition targets. I think I need to research the 629 line.

IMO the Classic 5" Model 29-5 is arguably the high water mark in Model 29 production unless compared to a 29-6 in equivalent configuration since it would have the new rear site unit.

Bear in mind the 629 was introduced at the 29-2 revision run so the 29-5 is equal to the 629-3 revision (last of the SS forged flash chromed hammer trigger combo).

Problem with the 29-5 and 629-3 is that the rear site unit is unique to that revision.

Congratulations on your purchase. I've had a 29-5 Classic Hunter for a long time, and it's one of my favourite gun.

Differences between the 29-5 and 29-6 are the same as between the 629-3 and 629-4. The 29-6 and 629-4 have the new style extractor and a different rear sight as well as the new style cylinder release being implemented during that time.

I haven't seen a blue full underlug N-frame before. It sure does look good.

I'm still up in the air about the full under lug. These two came with it.

Edit:Middle photo isn't my actual gun, but exactly the same thing anyway. I'm not a great photographer I admit.

Thats really nice! Love the chamferred cylinder. My 29-6 says hello. I have the interchangeable front sights and now use a gold bead partridge. The gun is super accurate and the action on mine os sweet.

Nice Revo! I had a Patridge sight on my JM625.. It was great for target acquisition but miserable for presentation. The sight came off twice when pulling from a nice holster. Replaced it with the orange insert ramped front sight and all was well again! YMMV.

Even though this has a nicely chamfered cylinder The look of an unfluted cylinder has really grown on me. I have a model 25-9 with an unfluted cylinder now and I really like the look. I already have some feelers out to find an unfluted cylinder to have fitted to this gun.

I've seen the combination of Black & White Ebony together before and I think it's an outstanding combination of two really exceptional woods.

I also really like the unfluted cylinder, especially on big guns, so I bought another Classic Hunter a few years ago
