I know that this can be a really opinionated question but what is the more desirable barrel length and finish for a Model 29-2?

I'm guessing some would get excited by a 5 inch barreled, nickel finished, 29-2.

Of the common barrel lenghts price wise it seems that 4 inchers are pretty trendy right now. Nickel is less common and might also be priced a little higher.

For me, give me a 6 1/2 barrel and blued finish.

I'll answer your question, then I'll opine.

For me a 3" or 4" blue. Back in deer hunting days 6 1/2" with 6" a close second.

5" barrels are hard to fine in a mod 29 gun. A little easier for some variations like the classic model and maybe a 629.

I always marvel at these type of threads. Don't you have a preference? What would be your intended use/purpose?

Buy what you like to fit your need. You'll get a opinions here that are worth exactly what you paid for them.......

I guess I don't want this to turn into another "my opinion is better than the other guys" thread.

4 inchers seem to be worth more right now.I prefered the longer barrels when I did a lot of shooting, but now that I carry more I prefer the 4 inch.

After firing a wide range of barrel lengths, 5" is my favorite. But what's handy or available sometimes forces me to compromise.

I prefer 4" because it's portable, and blue because the blue finish on a 29 is S&W's best. I think the 4" blue 29 is S&W's classic best. However, you should know that my opinion is nearly worthless - I proudly show my 4" 29 with Pachmayr no-medallion SN-S Presentations. I think that the stock target grips **** *** ****** *****, and the "Goodyears" are the best of the grips contemporary with the early 29s.

I will guess that the 4" blued is the most popular which is great for me. I have loved long barrel handguns since my first one which was a 10 1/2" Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 magnum back in 1966. I prefer stainless or nickel plated long barrels.

Maybe i'm getting older or my 44mag loads are too stout my ruger redhawk with its 5 1/2" barrel is kicking my butt with its recoil. The 7 1/2" barreled redhawk i have shoots better withy less recoil. Thats why i choose the new S&W 29-10 with its 6 1/2" barrel. On the other hand my new S&W M58 in 41mag with its 4" barrel shoots awesome i love it.

BTW; I'm trying to get all my new S&W N frames in nickel finish.

For me it was the 4 inch and 6.5 inch with the Dirty Harry 6.5 inch probably winning.

I don't hunt. But I do pack N-Frames. That makes my pick 4" tubes.
Clearly a rare 5" gun changes everything. I personally prefer blued guns.

I guess as already stated, it depends what you are going to use it for.

The classic 6.5" will always be my first love.

A stainless 6" is pretty hard to beat too.

For a mix of old and new....I have a 4 screw frame that was a sad victim of neglect. It has had it's original barrel replaced with a 5" underlug and a matte blue finish.

Most sought after is the 5" due to extreme scarcity and value.

Next is 4" because it's cool and prices run higher.

Then the 6.5".

Then the post 1978 6" (just not quite the same panache as the 6.5").

Last is the 8.375" version. Best for shooting, but not as sexy as the shorter ones.

For me, 4" barrel. I just like the look of it. No other reason. Finish, hey, what can I say, I like the nickel finish over the blue. Again, I just like the look of it.

You may have to swap the wife, car, and a couple kids for a 5" gun if you can find one. I like 4" and 6.5" blued guns.

Kinda like JCS&W, I also really like the looks of a 4" model 29. I can't say I prefer nickel over blue, but I dearly love nickel guns. Here is my 4 inch nickel, with Kurac stocks and case by jcelect, shipped March, 1978.
teesur.

Model 29-2 6 1/2" Blue Finish

The classic 6 1/2" Blue finish Model 29-2 is just right. One of mine, October 1972 MFG.
