Greetings,

I have a an opportunity to purchase a Russian Model three with the serial number filed off on Gunbroker auction 722856886. Is this something to stay clear of? I need some help please. Can someone take a look and let me know what you think. I do know the reserve and it's $2500. Good or bad guys can you help me please.

I suggest you stay clear of that one even though in the scarcer .44RF. It has ZERO collectors value but a shooter value only. Condition is nothing special and the serial numbers are ground off. Wait for a better one. Even if no finish but mechanically excellent and has the serial numbers intact.

PS: the hinge pin has been removed, then reinstalled in the improper position as the pin protrudes too much and the alignment notch is facing rearward when it should be facing forward to sit flush. This means, whomever had it apart didn't know what he was doing and leaves me with a thought that it may be a "put together" using two or more same models.

There are no legal issues with the defaced serial number since this is a bona fide pre-1899 antique. But as others have said, it's not a collector. Since it has a centerfire cylinder, it could probably be made to shoot centerfire ammo. Or maybe it just has an incorrect rimfire hammer installed and is a centerfire .44 Russian after all??? Who knows.
