The mainspring that S&W puts in the Model 317 looks like an overrun from a contract for suspension springs for the M1 Abrams tank. To make matters worse, the hammer thumbiece is small and has sharp edges; it gets painful to cock after firing a few cylinders. I'd sure like to see a thumbpiece like the 'target' thumbpiece on the earlier revolvers; wider, rounded and with checkering. I think I even had one on a J frame about 1970. It would make cocking a lot less painful.

I recently bought a 317 that the spring had been swapped for a reduced power one. You may try this while waiting on someone to make your hammer wish come true. :)
Made an all around distinct difference with no misfires yet.

Just a thought: The hammer on the Model 63 has sharp, pointy
checkering, and it feels like the skin is being chewed off when shooting
in SA. I took a fine whetstone and took a little off the points.
Problem solved. A little at a time, not noticeable to the eye.
Since I've gone almost exclusively to DA shooting, I can't comment on
my 317. TACC1

Have y'all tried a "buffing" motion across the checkering with an emery cloth just to break the points? I had to do that a number of years ago with a 1911's checkering that was too sharp. After knocking off the points, it still gripped well, but didn't hurt my fingers.
