A friend of mine has a very nice 33-1 that is 98% w/o box. He asked me for info I know very little on these. Any information and what it could be worth would be greatly appreciated.
Nice one, although very nice, the grips are not original to the gun, they were shipped with the magna grip. The 33-1 known as the .38 Regulation Police was made in 1961 in the new J frame. !969 started the R prefix in the serial number and the model 33 was discontinued in 1974
Since the pistols shoots 38 S&W and not 38 Special, these pistols don't go for a lot of money. From the picture it looks pretty nice, but with the wrong grips and no box, I would say it would sell for around $300 where I live.
I own one and shoot it regularly with reloads. The 38 S&W cartridge is a lot of fun to shoot, but factory ammo is expensive, if you don't reload.
Thanks for the information. It does have the original grips they are just not on it. It's a nice little revolver, I have had not experience with them however.
Nice looking revolver! I have a 33-1 that did come with the box. Those grips are factory J-frame target stocks. As an odd coincidence, mine came with the very same stocks that are pictured. I would agree with the above stated price, because I gave $300 for mine. Here are a couple of pics:
I'll never know for sure, as my box doesn't state the type of stock (end label is gone), but those J-targets were available as an extra cost option at that time. The gun could have been ordered with them. The usual option, however, would have been magnas, as stated above.
