Model 36, circa 1970, Question

My Model 36 (J345xx) has a hole in the cylinder stop!
Do they all? Or is this something new? This J frame went back to Springfield for some work, but I only noticed the hole in the cylinder stop recently!
Your thoughts would be appreciated!

I have seen this on a M37 Air Weight before, to save weight I would think.

My J frame S&W Model 49 has a hole in the cylinder stop, but was put there recently by my gunsmith. The cylinder was not locking up completely, and would rotate. So the gunsmith drilled a hole to elongate the cylinder stop so it would fully engage the cylinder. Hope this helps.

They all do - that is how they fit around the Stud Pin and if you look at an exploded view of a Revolver you will see what I mean. Some are more evident than others since they sometimes need to be fit more than others.
