Model 36 how old?

hi, great forum. i just bought a model 36 with serial # AFJ2170. would someone please tell me the manufacture date. thank you. i was in the gun shop ready to buy a new five shot small ruger that locked up real nice and tite when i noticed the 36 on the used shelf. locks up real tite and came with original grips, rubber grips, speed loader and original box, also had the aluminum cleaning rod with brass brush in unopened plastic. appears almost new. i was so lucky.

I don't know the exact year, but I believe the 3 letters began in 1984. So that year or later.

I have a Model 36 from my father, made in 1967, and it looks brand new. There is a man named Jim McCullough at 334-875-6443 near Montgomery, AL who used to work for S&W and he and his son have the manuals that list manufacture date by serial number.
He was very busy when I called him so it took a while to get my information. Give him a call, he's easy to talk with and he'll find what you need. Good luck.
