does anybody know how the early model 37 was finished? it looks like the frame is finished different than the barrel and cylinder. was the frame painted and the barrel and cylinder blued?

Your model 37 has an aluminum frame with a steel cylinder and barrel.
Since aluminum cannot be blued it has a different type of finish.
Not exactly sure if it is a baked on paint or some sort of powder coat.
Someone more knowledgable than me will certainly know the answer to this question.

Correct, barrel and cylinder are blued and the frame is anodized.
Google 'anodized aluminum' for process explanations.

TSmith49 is correct. The anodizing process is very much like the finish on commercial aluminum window frames and doors, varying with thickness, color, and sealing process. In my opinion, the anodized frames of older Airweight J-frames is preferrable to the current finish on Smith & Wesson's most popular 642, which is essentially a clearcoat paint finish.
