model 37

I picked up a model 37 that does not appear it has been fired. It is a 3 screw flat latch serial number 93xxxx.

i paid 425 for it.

looking for age, value and if it is safe to shoot +p ammo.

An occasional cylinder of +P won't hurt it if the frame is intact. Many people practice with standard-pressure ammo and carry +P for personal defense.

At push-comes-to-bad-guy range the slight difference in point of impact will be negligible. It's not a 25 yard gun except for S&G at the range.

Are you sure about that serial number? Perhaps is there a letter before it? Or perhaps you have one too many XXXs after the 93?

Metallurgy changes over time and revolvers get stronger

Firing +P will not cause a catastrophic failure in your firearm, but it is not something I would want to be doing in an alloy framed snubby of that era.

If you want to be firing +P, I would look at acquiring either a more modern alloy snub nose or go to a steel frame.

You being fairly new to the forum, welcome. Your Model 37 is a wonderful carry revolver. Lightweight but durable. Is yours blued or nickel? The most popular was the 1 7/8" barrel length (commonly referred to as a 2"). As said in a previous post it's not a 25yd weapon but for "up close and personal" they are an excellent choice. In mine I prefer inverse hollow base wad cutters. Long time ago I had a trauma surgeon tell me those were the worst wounds to attempt to repair. Yes, there are hollow points & +P's and there is a lot of debate about what's best. In short barrel at a short distance I prefer something I know will work and will be easy to double tap on target. hardcase60

It is a 2" blue gun serail 93Jxxx. Thanks for all the info i got a box of non +p fmj from bass pro and it will be a bedside gun untill my comp tac holster comes in.

Personally, I won't use +P ammo in any of my alloy frame guns, including my 637 that is rated for +P. It just is not worth the chance of a cracked frame.

Check your serial number again. On your last post you put a J in the middle. 93Jxxx

A shipping date can only be obtained with a Historical Letter.

Firearms do not necessarily ship in serial number sequence, so it is impossible to generate ranges of numbers in specific times when we are talking about production guns.

However in terms of manufacture date the floating J (1J1111-999J99) was most put on frames in the 1971-1972 era

93Jxxx being past the middle we can guess at 1972
