HEllo,

I have a model 38 bodyguard. The cylinder is stainless or nickel but the frame is blued. Can anyone tell me if that if factory or if someone along the way changed the cylinder?

It could be factory. One of the Michigan State Police guns. Or someone could have changed the cylinder for one reason or another along the way. Only way to know for sure is getting a factory letter.
If you post the first part of the serial number, someone here will be able to tell you if it falls in the range of the Michigan guns.

Oh and welcome to the forum.

According to the Standard Catalog of S&W by Supica and Nahas (3rd Edition):

"1969: Begin "J" serial prefix: Sales to Michigan Police Supply with stainless cylinder."

Thanks for the info on this. The gun I have is a MSP issue. Are these worth anymore or less than the standard blued 38?

Maybe so in mint or near mint condition. I researched a few of these recently but they were all really chewed up cosmetically. I bet they weren't shot that much, though. I found them from $280-$350, but all 3 looked terrible.

I wanted a Mod 38 for carry since I'm too much of a ***** to carry my early 50s and late 50s Centennials, Centennial Airweights and Chief's Airweights. I settled on an early 70s pinned bbl. Mod 38 which looks like it was barely shot, for a little under $400. I plan to carry and shoot it often and not obsess about it's looks. The alum. alloy j frames are probably the easiest gun in a decent self defense caliber to carry under any circumstances. And I am primarily a semi-auto guy. Author Ed Lovette, who wrote "The Snubbie Revolver" says he thinks of j frames as 5 shot derringers. I like that analogy.

I bet if I found a minty Michigan State Police Mod 38 it would have been over $400
