Model 38 flat latch?

Found an interesting model 38flat latch. Looks to have matching box and such. It's not pristine, but looks in good functional shape. I use a j frame regularly(a 337) and I like the idea of the shrouded hammer on this older 38. Reminds me of my Dads old Colt Agent.

Anything specific to check out on these? Looks like I could get it for $850. Not sure it would turn into a regular carry piece, but I don't want a paperweight either.

If it's stamped MOD-38 or MOD. 38 on the frame in the yoke cut it likely shipped between fall '58 and early '66.

The one thing to "look for" that would be off putting is a crack in the frame below where the barrel protrudes through the frame. You have to role out the cylinder to see that spot. See the photo of the Chiefs Special Airweight Model 37. A crack makes it a paperweight, albeit a light one.

Price might be a wee bit rich, but I sure don't see many of them.

I'm very fond of the Model 38. I believe they are the best pocket handguns ever made.

They are superior to the newer J frames built on the larger magnum frame. The larger frame is clunky in comparison. The older frame is svelte in comparison.

I'm not sure I'd pay that much for your example without examining it. Don't imagine that the flat latch adds any value over the more common ones.

I think you're looking at a $550 revolver.

I heartily disagree.

The flat thumbpiece was used in the era when the Bodyguard (either Model 38 or Model 49) had their own unique semi-high horn stocks with a diamond in the center. The thumbpiece changed to the contoured style in February '66, and we see the last unique stocks in '68. When the serial numbers changed to a J+up to 5 digits in '69 so did the stocks -- to the standard short magna stocks worn by the Chiefs Specials.

The diamond semi-high horn stocks add at least $50 to the package, and to a collector so does the flat style thumbpiece.

I had a M-38 crack under the barrel .The Model 36steel frame does not crack like the alloy frames. The old Mod. 36 barrel was threaded in and pinned,a class well made wheelgun. That said I still have a M38 that is ccw ,but not a range gun and is shoots standard pressure 158 swc loads.

I enthusiastically accumulated older J frame airweights until I learned of their propensity to crack. Once I learned where to look for the crack, I found that in my collection of seven guns, four where cracked including a Mod 38, brand new in the box! I divested of the cracked guns by disassembling and selling the parts (at a loss). The four that were not cracked were reevaluated and I sold two and kept a Mod 37 and a 38. They are rotated as cc guns but I actually prefer my Mod 49. All this being said, they are very light and easy to conceal. Shoot only mild loads, of course.

As mentioned, look for the crack in the frame and just be aware that you should probably never shoot a +P round thru it I know some will say limited use of +P is okay but I personally would not chance it. Good luck.
