Model 39 mags

Hello, I just bought a model 39-2 and was wondering if someone could tell m e about the different followers used on this magazine. I still have a magazine from a previously purchased 39-2 and it has an "X" shaped metal follower. The follower on the 39-2 I just picked up has a plastic follower. The mags otherwise look identical. Did S&W switch to the plastic follower after a certain date? Thanks.

The 39 no dash and early 39-2 have a metal figure 8 style follower,
Not sure what year it changed to a plastic follower but guessing early 70's.

Thanks Engine. So my 39-2 with a 72-73 date would be correct with the plastic follower? Is the plastic follower considered to be an improvement?

I have found on some plastic followers that the long skirts on the front or back may break. Remove the spring loaded base and slide it forward. I f plastic fragments fall out, replace the follower. It was an economic move by the factory.
