Model 39 serial number range

Hello,

I have a S&W model 39 that was given to me. Y my father years ago. It's in great condition and I have all the original paperwork and the box it came in. Ser# 87xxx I was wondering what the value of this gun might be.

Hi fellas I just got a 39-2 with serial number A2002xx can some one help me to know what year it was made, it's nickel so is that make it any special? thanks for help upfront.

Nickel makes it worth more. Serial numbers ran from A175001 in 1973 to A235000 in 1974.

Hello james, sorry for bro passing. Happened to me last year.
His 62XX is an early mod-39, 1958 ship date. Do me a favor and tell me the configuration of the follower of the magazine. thanks, Mike
PS pics are great.

Not sure what you mean?

I don't know a lot about guns, I do know it has an anodized aluminum bottom and steel upper, black. Let me see if I can upload a photo. My brother was an MP in the airforce in the early 80s and I believe he acquired it back then. I'm not seeing any way to add a picture , if I'm missing it somewhere please let me know.
Thank you for your condolences

There were quite a few Model 39s in that SN range shipped in 1969 to the Army and Air Force Exchange. Why they were shipped 10-12 years out of sequence is a mystery. Might your brother have bought it at the BX?

I would say 1958 is more likely but these pistols (like many S&W) were sometimes shipped way out of sequence so the only way to know for sure is to letter it.

Possibility

But I really have no way of knowing. Where do I get the correct phone number for Smith and Wesson to figure this out? I will add that it does not have wood grips, it's the black rubber wrap around type.

Go to the top of the page and click on Downloads, then SWCA Files Download Area, then SWCA Forms, then Letter Request Form. A letter from the historian will show ship date and destination.

You can also find the forms for joining the SWCA there, if you desire.

Model 39-2 Date of manufacture

Have a Model 39-2 with Serial # A522XXX

Any help with estimated date of manufacture by S&W?

Thanks.

This is open again......

So I will ask about my 39-2 if I can, serial # 109893, thanks for any info.
I did some more looking up, mine has all the accoutrements of the 39 model, hammer hole, large ampersand, larger slide stop dimple, non slotted mag release, solid barrel bushing, also the -2 is crooked and looks like an add on, I understand they started at #1 in 1954 following through to 115,000 in 1970, so with my perusal I figure late 60s, true?

You've got an interesting transition gun. It probably shipped in 1970.
