Model 41 Ejection Problem?

The problem described happens around 4 to 6 times per hundred rounds of standard velocity CCI, evidently the ammunition of choice.

What happens is that the spent case appears to have been extracted. But, prior to ejection it gets wedged by the next round already partially chambered. The wedged, empty case is oriented left to right with the rim end at the left suggesting previous contact with the ejector.

I suspect the ultimate cause may be masked by other factors. Any constructive thoughts will be most appreciated.

Observe the pattern of normal ejects to see that they are fairly consistant. Try from a rest with a friend observing.
What ammo are you using?
Look at extractor to bbl alignment (no dragging) and look at ejector (on slide stop) to see it is square

Dapster;

Sight unseen, I'd guess the extractor is dropping the empty case before it strikes the ejector ..
The extractor adjustment is critical on all .22s. There's not much rim for the extractor to hold onto. .22 breech faces are often heavily battered. I remachine the counterbore and reset the headspace. This renews the sharp edges and aids the extractor with holding onto the case.
If your breechface is badly deformed, that may be an option..There is a large aggregate of factors that effect the function of .22s.

I have a similar problem on my 7inch barrel... the chamber is much tighter than my 5.5inch. Once I start getting a little firing buildup, I start having the problem that you described. Sometimes after only 30-40 rounds.

Once thoroughly cleaned, I'm good for a little more shooting.

NCTexan,
Once the problem commences, with what frequency does it continue? That is, with most every shot thereafter or merely intermittently? Thanks.

Once the problem starts, it happens 2-3 out of a 10 round magazine. That's a much as I can take and I switch off barrels to my 5.5 with a red dot.

Running a bore snake through it will improve it for a few more magazines, but it takes a thorough cleaning to fix it for the next outing.

I shooting CCI SV and have never had the problem with the 5.5 inch.

Not sure that it's the same problem that you have, but thought I'd mention it.

I'm open to any ideas or suggestions as well.

NCTexan,

I had the same problem as you: 7" barrel shot fine, 5.5" had failure-to-extract jams with a cross-wise case jammed against the next partially chambered live round. While looking at the gun (1975 A series) I noticed that the 7" barrel had a relatively large space between the rear barrel extension and the slide; while the 5.5 looked really close. It turned out that I couldn't slip a piece of 24 LB. computer paper in the gap. I ended up taking the points off of the serrations on the bottom side of the barrel extension of the 5.5" barrel (leaving 1/32" flats) and cold bluing. Problem solved. After the modification I went 500 rounds without a problem, then had an empty case left in the chamber (I had a buildup of carbon/powder residue in the case head area of the bolt. Once removed everything was fine again.).

PaperPatched.... thanks for your comments.

I checked the clearance from the barrel overhang and the slide, and it was the same for both the 5.5 and 7 inch. (looks like I could put 2 or 3 playing cards in the gap)

After firing both, the residue buildup on the 7 inch causes the round to bind... whereas firing the same number through the 5.5 there is little or no binding.

After firing and removing both barrels, a live round will extract from the 5.5 by gravity, but must be pulled out of the 7 inch.

I've checked the face of the chamber and neither appears to have damage, so best guess is that either the chamber is tighter or something is causing the residue to build more quickly in one.

Check the chamber mouth for a firing pin indent, may be ever so small, but it peens over the edge of the chamber mouth and causes the case to drag on it. Ironing the indent out and polishing the chamber should fix the problem. It also could be an overly tight chamber, and that will take a chamber reamer by a qualified gunsmith to fix.
