Hello -

I very close family member passed away recently. I inherited several of his firearms. One of them is a Model 41 in 7 3/8" bbl and according to the serial number lookup, it dates from 1969. I have the original box, instructions pamphlet and also have the muzzle brake. There are also two extra magazines plus the one in the gun for a total of 3.

My question is: will the magazine listed in the S&W store https://www.smith-wesson.com/product/model-41-422-622-2206-standard-magazine-22lr-10-round fit this vintage gun? Or is the magazine currently being sold only for "newer" version of the Model 41?

Sorry for the dumb question. I would like to get a couple of extra magazines and wanted to make sure before ordering.

thanks!

The new versions of the M41 magazines will fit and work in the old 41’s. The old magazines won’t work in some of the newer guns that use the 41 magazine like the 422,622, 2206.

My 41 dates to 1978 , and the new mag's will not work with it . Luckily another member sold me 2 12rd mag's and I have another 12rd new in the package .

In my experience the new mag's will not work in the older guns - at least without having to modify them. I tried getting 6 brand new magazines to work in my 1979 model 41. 3 were purchased in a LGS and the other 3 were replacements S&W sent me because the first three I bought would not even seat into the gun! None of them worked properly although 1 of them actually fed 2 rounds in a row a few times. lol! Sent them all back and bought 3 vintage, steel follower type on eBay. All work flawlessly.

New mags have worked okay in my 1979 model 41, but I ended up getting the older mags with metal followers. I think I'm right in saying that the way the "lips" at the top of the mag are shaped/adjusted makes all the difference, whether old or new mags. When I had David Sams restore my '79 41, I sent him--on his recommendation-- 5 metal follower mags to tune as well. Clarification: he didn't specify old, metal follower mags; they were just the ones I sent.

I have an older model 41 like yours with one original magazine with the metal followers and 5 of the newer magazines with the plastic followers. All work well, if you feel like you need another magazine I would buy a new 10 shot magazine and give it a try.

I have a Late '70's era model 41 that came with two magazines and I have a late '80's production model 622 that also came with two factory mags, all of the magazines function fine in both pistols.
