Should the magazine drop completely out of a Model 422 when the release is pressed?

I've got one magazine that drops all the way out. My other magazine only drops about 1/4 inch, and has to be pulled out. (In both cases, the 12 round magazines are empty and the gun is in slide lock).

The gunsmith at the shop where I bought the used Model 422 says it is normal for the magazine not to drop out. Please let me know what the magazines on your model 422 do. I can't find anyone local that owns a 422 to ask.

My mags drop out of my 622. They eject forecefully with the slide in battery. Are the exteriors of your mags nice and clean? Got any crud in the magwell? Maybe one mag has a little damage of some kind?

Thanks for the reply, Greg. The exteriors of the magazines are nice and clean. The magwell is clean also. I use an Outers pistol cleaning kit, plus an old toothbrush. I can't see any damage to either magazine.

Well, that's interesting;

The pin on the left is in backwards and maybe it's rubbing the inside of the magwell? I tried flipping one of mine around in a 10-round mag and it still ejected OK, so I doubt that's it. I even tried gently pushing in the mag release to see if some kind of drag might keep the mag from dropping free. I couldn't do it. You sure you don't have a gradual bend to one of your mags?

Good eyes! Yes, I had the magazine pin reversed on magazine #2. I took apart the magazine and put it in the same direction as magazine #1, but it didn't help.

Since I had the magazine apart, I decided to try swapping the insides of both magazines. By swapping all of the other parts, I find that the magazine tube of magazine #2 is the problem. Something about the magazine tube that has a #2 on it is different than #1, and is causing the magazine not to drop. But I'm not seeing the difference. The #2 tube does not look bent when I compare it to #1.

On my 422, the mag ejects partially (1 inch) and I pull it out the rest of the way. It has always operated that way, so I think it is normal.

Thanks for the reply, cmm. Your 422 has a magazine that works like one of my magazines.

I bought this used .22 pistol for my teenagers to learn with. Everything else works much the same as center fire pistols, except for the one magazine that won't drop. So they won't be able to practice magazine changes, unless I can figure out a way to get two magazines that both drop free. I may try calling every gun store within driving distance, and see if any of them have a magazine that will work for me.

In the meantime, they are enjoying shooting this pistol, it hasn't malfunctioned, and their accuracy is improving, so things could be worse.

I have owned eight of this series and still have six of them, plus a few spare mags. I have one mag that will not drop free in two of my guns, a 622 & 2206. Got three mags for a 2213 and one of them pops half-way out about half the time. I never really thought much about it until I read your post.

It only matters that the magazines drop when I take my teenagers with me to the local gun club for action pistol matches. The club will let newcomers (especially youth) shoot with a .22 pistol, and not require them to draw from a holster.

It is my fault that I did not check the second magazine when I bought this pistol used. Now that I've learned that all magazines will not eject, I will take this 422 with me when I buy another magazine, and make sure it ejects.
