Model 422 Questions

Local Pawn Shop has a S&W Model 422 with a 6" barrel and adj. sights for sale. It is obviously used, but looks to be in good shape. A few handling dings on the pistol & the wood grips & some aftermarket stuff used to try & make the sights 3-Dot.

Well I really like how the pistol feels & the price is good. My only issue is that I am unfamiliar with the Model 422 & do not know what to look for or examine to see if it is in good shape & problem free.

What are some things I should look for when inspecting a Model 422.

Look for the usual things. I would look to see if it is dirty. A dirty gun wears more quickly, and if the previous owner shot it and never cleaned it, that didn't help. Not a show-stopper. Just something to consider. Check the bore - signs of dry-firing (dinged chamber), corrosion, ring, etc. Are there any signs of kitchen-table gunsmithing? Magazine in good shape? Any indication it has been dropped?

I had a couple 422s years ago. They are nice little pistols - were inexpensive, at the time. They both shot well. The only criticism I had was the trigger. I never tinkered with mine, and didn't want to invest in having one tuned professionally. Because of the trigger, I couldn't shoot mine as well as my Model 34s, from field positions, and ended up letting both go. The Model 34s are still here.

They are lightweight, so are nice to carry on the trail. I would prefer one to a Ruger, for that reason.

Well, I have a 2206 6" AS; 2206 4.5" FS; two 622 4.5" FS; 422 4.5" AS wood stocks; and a limited edition 2213 brushed nickel finish. I have also owned two other 422's. Other than these things being difficult to find a holster for and the finish on the 422 being fragile, I have no complaints about them. The 422/622 guns are lighter and easier to carry but the extra weight in the 2206 guns give them an edge in accuracy. The 2213 is so light it is difficult to shoot off-handed. These guns run like Singer sewing machines. They are quite pricey around the Atlanta area.

Chamber looked good (no visible dings), crown looks good, wood grips look OK (some dings, mostly on the base of 1 side), Controls work well, and the trigger pull is good. Grip screws look dirty/rusty, but don't look stripped. Only comes with 1 magazine, though I found some 10 rounders & have a possible lead on some of the old 12 rounders.

Thinking I may slap the 25% down on it next week just to get it on hold. Worst case scenario I change my mind & I use the money down towards something else at the Pawn Shop (Old Ithaca 37 perhaps).
