I'd be a sucker for that Model 49.
Value? Not a lot.
It likely shipped in late 1982. Smith & Wesson used that serial series between J999999 and the alphanumeric serial numbers for Chiefs Specials and Bodyguards. It ran 1J0000 through 1J47502 in 1982/83, but many in the series didn't ship until the mid-'80s. My nickel Model 36 1J02454, for example, shipped to Abercrombe & Fitch on November 16, 1985.

Good tackle box gun, or truck gun! I can't shoot J frame revolvers worth a darn. I bet it would polish up with Mothers, or Flitz. You can not wreck it. Might be a fun project! Bob
Maybe $300 but I've seen people ask over $400 for one in similar condition.

My favorite J frames are the M38 and M49. As noted it might clean up fairly well. If it’s ok mechanically I’d bring it home for $300 but no higher.
