I look back and couldn't find any posts that answer my question, so I'm asking the many posters that know so much about S&W....I have a model 49, serial # 75xxxxx, in which the serial numbers are gold in color. Is that something Smith did? Might it be an after-market thing? It has a pinned barrel. Dob, I'm thinking, is in the late 70's.

TIA

certainly am learning a lot on this site....great bunch of posters.

There used to be a paint product that you could rub into the lettering on a firearm. Back in the 1970's it was a thing to do, like adding Target Trigger and Target Hammers, and the red ramp and white outline sights to every S&W you could so equip.

It was a fad, and to my knowledge neverdone by the factory on a standard production revolver. Whenever I encounter it, I apply some mineral spirits to the firearm and use a toothbrush to clean it off.

+1 on 9393 reply; think the DOB is more late '60's, maybe 67-68, according to the Standard Catalog, non-prefixed numbering ended in 1969 at 786544.
