Model 52 disassembly instructions

I would like to be able to disassemble my 52-1. Reasons for this are:

To increase the trigger pull weight. It is now at 2lbs and needs to go to 2.5lbs to be legal in bullseye.

To understand how to replace the extractor, should that ever be necessary. It's fine now, but I want to know how to do it.

Does anyone have instructions on how to disassemble the 52-1 so I can do those things. I can do it on a 1911, and expect that the 52 is not altogether different, but would like step by step instructions if anyone has them.

I don't believe you'll find anything regarding the trigger pull weight adjustment in the basic manual that was included with the model 52.
You may have to call S&W.

The NRA Firearms Assembly book on Pistols and Revolvers will have the information to help you regarding your Model 52. I doubt that you will find enough information to help you increase the weight on your pistol, but you might. thoughts on trigger adjustment

Thanks for the inputs so far. I am waiting for responses from the info provided.

A friend in our club told me to take off one grip and look inside the 52. The hammer spring is immediately visible, but so is what might be the sear spring.

Looking inside the 52 with the grip panel off, you can see what seems to be a flat spring which has a little tab that holds it in place (similar to a 1911). I'm thinking that if I open up the gun to access that flat spring, and bend it forward slightly, I can increase the pull weight on the trigger, in the same fashion as is done for a 1911.

But I've never done 'surgery' on my 52, and am hoping for a note from someone who's been there, done that, and can say that it is a correct methodology.

Call Larry at LGI. Or mail it to him. He'll get you going with legal trigger weight. He did my Pardini SP22. Brownells has the exploded schematic. You'll need an Allen wrench as I remember. When you look inside with slide off one screw is the take up. But the trigger stop is the one you get thru the mag well cut . Make sure you don't eliminate ALL the over travel. It won't cock. You will most likely need a trigger shoe for bullseye. Highly recommended! I can photocopy the factory instructions as I still have. But won't find trigger adjusting data in the inst.

Be very careful messing around with the sear spring unless you know what you are doing.

I had my fathers 52-2 returned to me after 47 years. I cleaned it when I was 13, but was having trouble remembering how to strip it down. After watching the youtube vid it all came back. Have shot 400 rounds out of it since the first of the year, I think I would score better if I didn't have all these tears in my eyes. Its such a pleasure to shoot, and knowing dad broke it in makes it that more special. I also got the box with it and six mags. Merry Christmas to me.

Be careful with that video posted up above. It has a major mistake. Six minutes in, it shows how to screw out the barrel bushing, while everything is still under spring pressure. It's a good way to damage those fine threads.
