Model 53 4 screw

Yup, that is what it looks like all right. Looks likely that yours originally came with the "extra" 22LR cylinder too - based on the missing punch out.

Here's my 53-2. It didn't come with the 22lR cylinder. Funny thing is my box exhibits a similar condition issue as what yours has - just above the hammer. Though yours has a good bit more damage. I wonder if that is due to the "switchable" hammer.

Did you have some questions about yours?

Grips

Have been reading posts about grips. Think these are uncheckered rosewood. Are they original to the gun? Think gun is 1st year or so because is a 4 screw. Maybe circa 1961.

I don't think they are original although they're certainly very nice. The original factory stocks probably were football cutout diamond targets. Like these on my first year 53 but with the football cutout; these are not likely original to the gun either.

What are the brass shells for?

They are actually steel (stainless I believe) and they are inserts shaped like the R3mington 22 Jet rounds on the outside but bored for a 22LR round on the inside.
They allow you to shoot cheap 22LR ammo in the gun - instead of having to shoot the VERY expensive Remington 22 Jet ammo.
When I say "very expensive" I mean about $1.50-$2.00 a round on GunBroker.

I believe all the model 53's came with walnut diamond grips. I don't recall seeing any smooth grips until the late 70's or maybe early 80's. But then the memory fades with age.......

I don't quite understand how the inserts work
wouldn't the firing pin still hit the center of the rimfire 22LR
or do rimfire not require a strike on the rim to go off?

The hammer has a rotating hammer nose with 2 positions.
In one position it hits center for firing Remington 22 Jet.
In the other position it hits off center for firing rimfire 22LR.
Really quite an elegant design.

Model 53-2 shipped in April 1968. Click on the photo for a better look

until then could we get a pic of how it works?

Here is my early Model 53, shipped to Evaluators in June of 1961. I have added a couple of extra pics to show how the inserts work

thanks for the pics showing how it functions
dual frame mounted firing pins interesting, you manually select which one the hammer hits? even more interesting, I imagine the inserts are not easy to find if one is unlucky enough to not have them
I did see brass and dies are available, so reloading is not a problem, (note to self, buy a model 53)

Note to self. A lot of Jet ammo will turn your barrel into this picture!
No need to wonder WHY the barrel is not attached to the frame !!
