Model 57 No Dash

I just picked up this model 57 no dash. It is in like new condition with a very light turn line. It locks up good on all cylinders, opens and closes fine and does not push off. Upon further inspection, I noticed more "marring" on the recoil shield than normal. What might have caused this and is it an issue? Thanks in advance!

The ratchet caused the marrying, it could have been caused by debris under the extractor or wear on the ratchet. You can check to see if the cylinder rotates without resistance, that can cause burrs on the extractor. However, the first thing I would check is to see if was caused by any previous owner(s). In other words is it still an ongoing issue.

I agree, it's the ratchets doing it. Can you post a good quality close-up of the rear of the open cylinder?

Does the cylinder open and close easily without any binding? My M57 would occasionally back out the extractor rod and if I weren't careful it would bind the cylinder, pushing it back against the breech face. Turning the cylinder while it is binding can push the ratchets against the breech face. That might be your issue. The rod is left-hand thread, check it for tightness.

What's the SN, out of curiosity?

Here are pictures of the rear of the cylinder. As I said, the cylinder opens and closes fine without binding and the extractor rod is tight. S/N is N607284. From what you are saying, I wonder if the extractor rod came loose and has since been tightened up.

A loose extractor rod is my guess, though fouling under the star could also be the culprit. I know that my 41 mag reloads using either 2400 or 4227 will leave unburnt powder, that would often find it's way to under the extractor star.

The extractor star does not look to be flush with the rear of the cylinder. A good cleaning under the extractor might solve the problem.

Early to mid 1979. My M29-2 SN N6628xx shipped 27 July 1979.

I love my M57, I load mine to around 1200-1250 fps, and it is very comfortable to shoot. I don't shoot my M29-2, it is a ANIB commemorative and shows no evidence of the previous owner shooting it.

You need to start a search now for a M58.
