Just stumbled upon a model 58 S257291 in of all places Gander Mountain. Locks tight but blueing has seen better days. Not original grips. $399 and won't deal on any used guns, I was told. Not at home to check out references. What do you
What do you guys think?

I think if I wanted a 41 mag shooter I'd have already bought it. If you want something nice, for $399 initially, refinishing costs still puts you in the neighborhood or below what you'd pay for nice one but won't add any 'collector' value, it will be for your own satisfaction only. May not be able to re-coup refinishing costs if sold later.

Way too good a price to pass up for a .41 Mag shooter. If I had the chance, I'd snap it up so fast you would not have a chance at it. ;)
Of course, I might have an ulterior motive - it would provide the excuse to get new dies and start loading for another cartridge . . .
All that to say - buy it!

Aloha,

I'd have bought it depending on what kind of shape it is in.

I've bought some tired police 58s for a lot more.

Going to cost me more to get them redone.

$399 of a S-prefix?!?! I wouldn't even haggle. I'd have it home already and be boxing it up for shipment back to S&W for factory refinish.

Why can't I find...

Which store? I'll see if they will ship to the nearest one.

Well, I didn't go back and get it. To be honest, I do not like Gander Mountain. Why do people go there to buy their firearms? The prices are insane compared to local gunshops. And try to get someone to help at the gun counter. Forget it. Anyway, after sleeping on it, I may throw pride aside and go get. I am through venting. Thanks for the advise on the 58, my thoughts exactly.

Go get it

I bought a M58 in 1973 for $160. It is a great gun. Ammo is a little pricey but far more pleasant to shoot than a M29. You won't regret it.

...for $399 it would have had to have been dragged behind a mule for me not to have bought it. Even with little finish on the gun you would have made money when you sold it....

I could have driven to Arkansas and got it in the time it is taking to get an answer out of GM. I'm beginning to remember why I stopped going into their stores.

Finally got to talk to a manager. I have drive the 90 miles to the store and buy a gift card which I can use to pay the store in Arkansas. Then they will ship it to the local store for $25. Then the local store will call me when they get it and I will have to drive back to the store and do the paperwork to pick it up. BUT since it is the holidays it may take 3 weeks to get it here.

SO, with taxes, shipping and $150 in gas added to the $399 it is not looking like such a good deal any longer.

My experience with GM is they really don't know what they are doing with used guns. Most are priced too high but occassionally they leave a lot of money on the table. Jr. and I check there frequently looking for the bargains. Don't even think about getting a good deal on ammo there.

If it is tight and only the finish is beat up, I couldn't get my money on the counter fast enough. It would be a great stablemate to my 57, and 657.

Aloha,

We do NOT have Bass Pro, Cabellas or Gander Mountain here in Hawaii.

I make it a point to always have a couple copies of my FFL's papers with me

when I travel on the mainland, Just in case.

When I find a gun I must have, I call him First and then make the deal.

Gun and I get back to Hawaii about the same time.
