Model 58, refinished by S&W

Very nice job they done on it, the lines look better now than they did before you sent it. Never know it is a refinish by looking at it.

I am in love with that 58. The 58 for me is "the one that got away"....I will own one someday......I love the Model 10 on steroids look

I wonder if they could get off duracoat and refinish as original?

Here in Puerto Rico you can only buy ammo in the calibers you got guns registered so to be able to shoot 38 spc on the 357's I got an older J frame 5 shot 36 model that had some holster wear on it's bluing, nothing mayor but it was there.

Anyway I got the gun just to be able to buy the 38 spc ammo for a measly $105!

Short story I felt in love with the thing, mechanically it is flawless, tried to do cold re-bluing couple of times on it with the stuff available over the counter but it just did not work so in my desperation I duracoated the thing, "winter gray" I got to put the "crack pipe" down, looks like a fricking mini flare pistol!

That was a HUGE mistake I deeply regret and to make it worst I took the entire, I mean everything apart before painting it, not a fun job putting it back together with all that paint in every nook and cranny.

No one does hot bluing here, can't get the chemicals shipped here without paying a ridiculous hazzmat fee. I got to ship it out so I suppose that might as well send it to S&W but I wonder about the duracoat part?

I was thinking a new sideplate too, but I'm not sure why they would. the only thing I can think of is the hammer block safety bar on newer guns looks different than on older guns. Maybe they replaced some internal parts?

Nice job on that 58. I've had three revolvers I bought that looked "rode hard and put away wet" when I bought them and refinished by the factory and always pleased with the result.

It's a Beauty!

Your M58 looks like it was made yesterday! You did right with the factory refinish; as for value concerns, so few M58s are in circulation that your gun will always be valuable.

Question about the target trigger: my M58 also has a target trigger. It has its original box, but "TT" is not checked on the box. Does anyone know if the TT is a replacement part, or were some of these shipped with the TT and just not marked on the box?

On some of the auction sites, I have seen the few M58s listed with different combinations of TH and TT.

Is it just me, or is the trademark logo on the sideplate different on the re-finished gun? It looks like it's in a different location now.

Wow, I hadn't noticed that but yes, it does look like a different sideplate. El bizarro! I wonder why they would do that - there didn't seem to be anything wrong at all with the original. The invoice didn't say anything about a new sideplate, and when I've sent other guns back they've done things like replaced the hand and it was always noted. It does seem to fit perfectly though.

Regarding the target trigger, I had assumed that it was a replacement by a previous owner - it doesn't look factory to me. But I don't know that for a fact.

From the pics, that looks like a great job and I think your money was well spent. I would not have been happy with your gun as it was, and since I have no aversion to a good refinish job, I think you came out of that deal "smelling like a rose!" :)

The fact that they "relocated" your trademark on the sideplate is of no interest, to me.

Could you tell what caused all that damage? It looks like it was stored in a gravel pit and dragged behind a truck down the gravel road.

hmmm......I've got a 58 that I bought here from 1*45 a couple of years ago. It isn't exactly pristine...has mostly honest carry wear on the cylinder and a little on the muzzle. After seeing this one, I may have to consider the refinish route. As an aside, the trademark on mine is located more like the refinished version on this gun.

It's already been asked but not answered...how much for a factory re-finish? Is it dependent on the individual gun's condition, the model or is it a flat fee? Inquiring minds want to now! (smile)

Actually it was answered in the initial post (beneath the pictures) - $190 for the standard polish and blue. S&W also offers a glass bead blue for $145 and a high bright polish blue for $235.

How long did S&W have the gun?

As best I can recall, about 5-6 weeks. I had also sent them an M28 that had been converted to .45 Colt, last year. http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1961-1980/85870-factory-refinished-m-28-2-45-12-pics.html
(The refinishing cost then was $180, so it's gone up a bit.) They had it about the same length of time then, too. Unfortunately they did some action work on it that I wasn't expecting, and now the spare .45ACP cylinder no longer fits. I guess I should've sent it along with the gun - I'll know better next time.

TomK:
Thanks for posting such an interesting thread with so many detailed photos! As you can see, many of us think about doing something like this from time to time, and it is very helpful to have the cost and the results laid out for us.

Good job!
