I picked up this nice M58 today. It is a little unusual as it has Stainless hammer and trigger, both wider than the standard. I also got the original hammer and trigger to go with it. Numbers on the stocks match the serial. I thought I would immediately be changing the hammer/trigger back to the originals, but I am kind of liking this different look. The lockup and mechanics are perfect, and the hammer pull is light and crisp. Maybe a combo from a M657? What do you think?

For a few extra bucks, I also got a brand new M58 barrel in the deal.

1. It works
2. It works well.
3. It looks good too.
4. Perhaps those parts were installed for a reason?
5. You have the originals and can put them back anytime you want to sell.

I've seen a couple of guns where I think somebody sent them to Armoloy (or somebody) and had just the internals done. Might be part of a trigger job. How's the DA pull?

My 657 has black hammer and trigger but I suppose some earlier than mine had the (not really) stainless hammer and trigger. Maybe. Never thought about it but probably.

I plan on putting a full target hammer and trigger set on my 657 and having them plated/Armoloyed to make it look right.

I would venture to say these are chromed parts as used on the stainless guns of that era. Not SS
To my understanding, this is correct. The first stainless steel handgun, S&W's Model 60, briefly had stainless steel hammers and triggers; galling issues quickly caused S&W to switch to carbon steel flash chromed to approximate the look of stainless.

Yep, not likely stainless, but flash chromed parts from a stainless N-frame. That's not an original configuration, but on a shooter, originality is not a necessity.

I went the opposite direction on my 66 and 624. Case hardened target trigger and hammer replacing the factory. Still have the factory.

John,
I enjoyed our phone visit yesterday. Your model 58 looks unique and I like interesting items. I would keep it as is if you like the trigger action and if you sell it you could pass along the spare trigger and hammer if that's important to the buyer.

I acquired a used N serial number model 58 several years ago. Mine has a wide trigger similar to the OP’s and a standard hammer. This revolver has the smoothest DA / SA trigger I’ve ever encountered. The timing, end shake, etc. are perfect. Removing the grips it had when I acquired it revealed stampings indicating a factory refinish in 1979. In addition to the nice re-blue, I’m thinking the factory may have installed the trigger at the same time. Wondering if the OP’s revolver may have been back to the factory at some point?

I like the color case hardened hammers and triggers on my stainless guns. Use TH and smooth combat triggers too.

I like the look.....I would be glad if I had the originals such as yourself, but I really would be in no hurry to change them out.

Very nice...have a feeling that if you put the original parts back in they probably won't have the same feel as the updated parts...

Bought a 70s vintage 57 about 15 years ago that had been D&T for a Leupold scope base. It also had a flashed chrome hammer and trigger...very smooth action... Whoever the smith was that did the work was good...he didn't even punch the holes all the way through the topstrap so with the rear sight in place one would not even know it was D&T...zero issues with the mount holding up under recoil...

Have a good time with your new friend...is this your first .41?

Bob

Very nice 58!

Same situation with a 2.5” 19 I picked up last summer. So far I’ve kept the polished target trigger and hammer installed.

Some modifications are improvements. The previous owners did the right thing by keeping the original parts. If it is reliable I would keep it in its current configuration.

Now that I look at this more carefully, I believe the hammer and trigger are the hard chromed ones. Neither one is the 1/2" wide target size, but the middle 3/8" ones, which I believe have been referred to as combat size. The trigger is not serrated, but smooth which feels really good to me.

I have had the stocks off to check serial numbers, and there are no markings to indicate a return to the factory.

Not my first .41. I have 3 other M58's and a handful of M57's. That caliber seems to grow on you after awhile.
