Model 58

A local old school gun shop has a good looking Model 58 for sale for $650. There is no box or tool but three boxes of ammo. Fair price?
Not a steal, but it if it were presented to me at that price, would have to do it! Bob

Grips: $150. Ammo: $125-$150. Makes the gun about $350 to $380. When are you going to find another Model 58 for less than $400?

Please, let us know, where you can buy any of these items for these prices, and where you live?

3 boxes of ammo at $45-$50 per box, and I've seen two sets of the grips on a well known auction site for $150 in the last month.

It was better than expected, great revolver. The finish is 95%+ and grips are in great condition. It is a great companion for my 657.
I assume you bought it?

If not, put me in touch with the seller!

Hard to tell from a distance, but assuming the action and timing are good, that the barrel and rifling are good, and that there are no issues that would require an immediate trip back to S&W to rectify, the price seems eminently reasonable. I vote yes.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but what is it that makes these stocks unique to the Model 58? Anyone have a picture that shows these stocks next to a 'regular' pair?

Don't have a picture of standard N frame magnas, but the Model 58 and Model 520 have PC magna grips that are round at the bottom. Sure someone with more knowledge than me will have the appropriate photo.

The PC Magna grips with diamonds go for even more. I have an "S"-series 58 that actually came with diamond target grips. But I bought some diamond PC Magnas just in case somebody wants to get picky. :D

come on guys...the shop is where? This is a $800 plus gun..

OK - Now I see the difference. I took off one of the grips from my old 'S' prefix Model 58 and took a picture of it next to another grip. The 58 is on the left.

IIRC, every model 58 had the PC service grips?
Steve

They are not making any more so if that is what you want, and it is in good shape, go for it. One of the few gun show purchases I ever made was one of those about ten years back, maybe a bit more. I had been sort-of looking for one for some time. Got one with decent but not great wood grips in good operating condition and with good appearance for about $500 if I recall correctly, maybe $550. I considered it a very reasonable price at the time. Shoots fine.

I don't think you can beat the price. I have been looking for a Model 58 for several months. prices are $800 plus.

He probably went back the next day and it was long gone at that price, and he is too embarrassed to admit it!!!!
