Model 5906 ??

I am new to shooting, and just bought a S&W Model 5906. Love it. I purchased a set of Hogue grips for it and a friend who loves guns wanted to install them for me.

After the grips were installed I noticed that every now and then after a fire and empty round ejected the gun would not fire. The hammer was back looking like it was ready, but the trigger didn't feel like it had released.

In looking through the little manual that came with the Hogue grips I noticed that my friend did not install the pin for the mainspring retainer. Even though the grips looked like everything was fine, the gun would not fire. I would have to decock and then it would fire.

My question is: Would not having the pin installed cause something like this to happen? Tonight I did install the pin as instructed by the grip sheet but have not had a chance to fire it. Just thought I would ask the question here to see if anyone would know for sure if not having the pin installed may cause this kind of thing to happen.

I was really hoping someone would take a stab and answer that one for me. Tomorrow I will be ordering a second 5906 because I really like this one and wanted to have a second to carry.

Hopefully it will warm up to where I can try out the gun again to see if the pin securing the mainspring retainer was the issue. Thought maybe someone here would know the answer and save me the guess work.

Gotta honest, never had that problem, but I don't see why not. Only way to know is to shoot it and find out.

Just a heads up on the grips. I don't know if I am the only one this has happened to, my luck I am. Seems about every Hogue grip I have installed on the S&W 3rd gens have shot loose over time, granted most of mine were on 40 and up calibers. They never came off, but there was a definite amount of play in them over time. I have stuck to the factory grips since and had no issues.

You will love the 5906, it will give years of reliable service, and they eat just about anything you feed them.

I'm ordering the other 5906 in the morning and plan on keeping the stock grips on that one. The grips that came on this one had some wear so figured I would try the Hogues.

So far I like them, and for me it greatly improved the overall feel of the pistol. I really like this one, and it is a blast to shoot. Since I am just getting started I am keeping target distances simple. Wanted to get familar with how the gun shoots and started at 15 feet. With a bench rest I can cut the bulls-eye right out of the target. Still learning and trying to improve my free-hand shooting, but that will come.

The 5906 is a hell of a gun, I was very impressed when I got this one. Main reason why I am getting a second one.

I guess the lesson I've learned here is that when you get a new gun, or new to me new gun, shoot it for a while to get familar with it so you know what problems you have before making any changes. I just got in a hurry with the grips and am hoping that it was that stupid pin not being installed and not something wrong with the pistol.

I'm surprised that the grips have stayed on without the pin. The pin holds the mainspring in place and could very well cause your problem. Remove the grips and put the pin back in the frame to secure the adapter, then put the grips back on.

Second this, there's no question that the problem needs to be corrected, that's step 1. If the function issue persists after fixing the incorrect installation of the grip, then begin to explore what else might be wrong.

The problem is the grip pin. I bought a NIB 5906 from CDNN a couple years ago and it arrived without a grip pin, the gun had a lot of failures-to-fire. Sent it back to S&W, the repairs just listed replacing grip pin, but see that they also polished feed-ramp--which is was in no relation to failure-to-fire.
