Model 60 3" Report After 400 rnds

To the OP

I would not give up on .357 loads in your gun without trying some of the "lighter-kickers." W-W and R-P (and maybe others) produce 110gr JHP mags that do well in my snub mags and will certainly give better ballistics in your 3" bbl. Also the CCI Blazer 158gr JHP .357 "medium loads" that another poster reported a measured 990fps in 3". Recoil of both loads is controllable in a steel frame gun such as yours.

I have a S&W 36-6 that, conceptually, identical to your Model 60, except that it is carbon steel and rated for only 38 Special.

Historically, I have shot it only SA beyond 7 yards, and it groups well at 50ft to 25 yards. It came with the nubby rubber Hogue Monogrip, which was quickly replaced with a wooden Hogue Monogrip. With this grip, it handles well and carries well.

From my perspective, the 3" target sighted J frame is a perfect multi purpose revolver, used within reasonable constraints. Just remember that it can't perform beyond what it was designed to do.

I find myself carrying this 60-15, 3" IWB more and more frequently.

Age and gravity seem to make this a more comfortable choice rather than OWB carry of my K-frame snubbies or $OB carry of my 20-yr old Kimber Ultra Carry.

Hello, what holster is that with the Model 60 pictured ?

I've seen reviews of the Winchester 145 grain .357 Silvertip where it clocked 1200 FPS from a three-inch barrel.

A member who's a retired detective from a suburban Dallas force checked on its terminal effects in actual shootings. He said that it was almost too effective. I guess he's more squeamish than I am. If I shoot somebody, I want them DRT. (Dead Right There.)

If you can handle its recoil in such a small gun, that may be an excellent defense choice. In a K-frame .357, it'd be an even better choice. I've sometimes carried it in my M-66-3, which has a four-inch barrel.

Yes. I have fairly large hands and can get all three on . Nice fit and feel good in my hand. Also seem to point well.

I haven't had a chance to fire it yet with them on. Too darn cold outside.

I haven't seen the Altamont catalog. Do they have other grips named after eagles or other raptors?

There's a Bataleur eagle in Africa. A very impressive bird...

Wayne:

My 60-15 is shown in a Milt Sparks VersaMax II that I ordered with a horsehide back. This is my warm weather carry rig and the horsehide does a really nice job keeping moisture from absorbing into the holster.

Then again, I'm not all that sure any gun is "designed to do" any preset level of performance. I know that in the right hands I've seen various firearms perform far beyond the level anyone would predict or expect... by any criteria based on their design. Just my experience, YMMV!

I too found those factory grips by Goodyear to be abominable and replaced them on mine with a set of ebony stocks from a Thai seller on flea-Bay. They are reminiscent of the K-frame smooth combat finger groove stocks I like so well, but also enclose the back strap for an even better fit in my hand. Again, this is personal preference and for anyone else, YMMV! ;)
