At a LGS this afternoon and saw a Model 60 no dash with pinned barrel. SN R1822XX looks like it might date to mid/late 70's....sound about right or? It is a consignment gun that they just got in, so the owner may not be in a bargaining frame of mind...asking price is $550.00. I thought it had after market wood grips, but when I called back the LGS said were Smith grips ('factory'), though I don't know if he said that simply because it has medalions. They overlapped the frame bottom so S.N. could not be seen. The LGS said it was brought in by the widow of a Police Chief....might have an interesting 'history' (provenance could likely be discovered). No box, papers, etc. but appears to be well taken care of and in above average condition. Looking for comments...pro and/or con, would you do it for that price?

For the stated condition and no accouterments, the price is a bit high IMO. $450 would be more in the ball park. If on the prowl for a Model 60, might I suggest the best of all the Chief's is the M60-7 IMO. All pertinent upgrades with nothing you don't want!

The 60-7 was actually rated for +P ammo - first dash number that was . It has a wider front sight and wider smooth trigger. It usually has a flash chromed trigger and hammer. They are great guns and IMHO the best f any Chief's Specials. The 60-7 also is on the regular J frame - not the stretched version which came at the next dash number. It is not chambered for 357 magnum which I see as a plus. Why carry the extra size and weight for a round you will only fire once - recoil is ridiculous! No internal lock and the firing pin was still mounted on the hammer, which I personally prefer.

Not to hijack the OP's thread, but my LGS has a no-dash 2" M60 and no-dash M36 tagged at $750.00 each. The store took the guns in trade from the same original owner who then bought other guns.

Both snubbies look clean, with original grips. No box or papers with either.

What's a fair price for these J-frame snubbies these days?

Well, I'm 'guessing $550 was certainly a 'fair' price, I went back today to buy it and it was already gone! I saw it Friday afternoon, 'snoozed' on it Saturday (while posting the question here on Friday), the LGS was closed on Sunday, and 'lost' it by Monday. 'SNOOZE=LOSE' !

Prices can really depend on location. A clean model 60 in my area (So. AZ) will go for around $550. With rougher versions around $450-$499. I pulled a fairly nice, blued Model 36 w/rubber grips out of a pawn shop last year for under $400, but that was just luck.

I picked-up this clean 1983 Nickel 36 for $499 2 weeks ago. Saw it on a Sat. morning, and luckily it was still there on Monday morning when I went back.

The M60 is stainless and the M36 I looked at is blue, but both were clean. Both no-dash.

Yeah, I'm thinking $500 is within the 'reasonable' range for a clean pre-Hillary Hole J-frame of unknown round count.

But I'll defer to the opinions of the resident J-frame experts.
