Model 60 - ' Skipping '

So I stopped by my local shop yesterday on the way home and I was asked to look at a model 60 in for a cleaning and repair.

The claim was that the cylinder was 'skipping' - upon examination of the pistol it appears that the cylinder stop, every once in a while in double action, will not fully extend up out of the frame and engage the cylinder notch itself. Thus the cylinder can still be rotated.

Having not had the time to take the side plate off an look at the internals. What would be your initial thought, if you saw this on a visual inspection, without having had the chance to look at the internals?

Stop spring broken?

With so few details, I'm just guessing at this point, but since it's in for a "cleaning", it's probably filthy and the proper function of the cylinder stop and/or c.s. spring have been compromised, either by crud or old lubricants. (or both)

Could be a weak bolt spring, but try a good cleaning first. Good luck.

You could also have a burr on the CS "window" or the CS itself that hangs up once in a while. Either way, crud or a burr is no big deal to repair.

Forgot the phone at home...no pics....

So......crud yep - busted spring yep....

Stripped action...ultrasonic bath of all parts....new spring reassemble. ...light oiling....good as new.

Nice positive actuation of the stop in both sa and da....with good timing. All done.

Usually caused by those who pop the side plate, spray their favorite gun cleaner/lubricator about like they're greasing a cake pan and then close it up . . .

Lol...now - I am old enough to have algae a record player...and and times we did put a penny on the arm......

Yep, been there and done that as a kid with our old record player we had as kids. Worked too, but really was hard on the old vinyl records.
