I'm really liking the looks of the Model 617 4" barrel, 10-shot, 22LR. Downside are the current prices and lack of availability. I may have to wait a while until things settle down...sigh. :(

Best .22 revolver ever. Here's my 617-4 in a six-inch. Never fails.

Nice one. The 6" barrel is a tad too long for me. A 4" barrel should balance out for me nicely. I've got some Federal Lightning 40gr lead nose set aside and ready to use when I do get one.

Last summer I found one exactly as you describe and doing my best to run a home for wayward firearms felt compelled in giving it a place to rest. I got around to shooting it a couple months later and to tell you it's exactly what you think it will be is an understatement. It is everything you can imagine and more!! My perspective is that the 617 is a well engineered and made, accurate and good looking piece of mechanical genius. Don't give up!!!! I did see a new 6" 617 the other day for less than $700 which is less than I've seen them for elsewhere but with a 4" at home, it didn't scream at me.

Avigar: You have good taste! They are great shooters and a ton of fun. I would consider it a must have pistol. It should be worth the wait. Boy they are not cheap though.:(

My 6" 617-6 is one of my prized possessions. I like it so much I'm looking for a 6 shot 617 as a stable mate.

i have an 617-4 4 " i buy it on second hand to remplace an calamity
an sig mosquito ,an jewel.

That is not a 617-4. It has the lock, it's a -5
A -5 is 6-shot. I meant to say 617-6.

The 617-2 had a 10-shot aluminum alloy cylinder; All of the others have stainless steel cylinders. Some of the last 617-2s apparently had stainless steel cylinders. The finish on the 617-2 is bead-blasted to match the clear anodized cylinder.

617-0: flash-chromed forged parts, non-drilled&tapped frame, 6-shot stainless cylinder
617-1: color case hardened forged parts, drilled&tapped frame, 6-shot stainless cylinder
617-2: CCH forged parts, D&Ted frame, 10-shot aluminum alloy cylinder (transitional, later ones started to have MIM triggers and stainless cylinders)
617-3: MIM hammer/trigger, D&Ted frame, change to integral frame lug, 6-shot stainless cylinder
617-4: 10-shot stainless cylinder
617-5: 6-shot stainless cylinder, internal lock system
617-6: (current production) 10-shot stainless cylinder, ILS

I tried usig a 6 inch barreled S&W617 but found it too muzzle heavy and opted for the 4 nch version. I wish they made the 6 inch version without the full underlugged barrel much like the old K-22's.

Joewisc, what are those letters/numbers on the frame just below the cylinder? Are they the serial number? Just curious when did S&W start placing the serial number in that location? Maybe it's something new S&W recently started doing?
Typically the serial number is not visibly in plain sight, normally located under the yoke or under the grips of all my Smith's including my 617.

Lobster Picnic asked:
“How do you like the Jerry Miculek stocks?”

I like them very well.
I also have them on my 4” 625-3, my 5” 625-4, and my 646.

Some years back I shot the 646 in IDPA and set up the 4” 617 as a training aid when I didn’t want to take time to load up for the 646. Their weight is only a few ounces different and they feel remarkably similar in handling.

Yes, it's the serial number. also stamped under the yoke. Don't know why it's twice stamped.

The blued revolver is a model 17.
The full lug model was introduced in 1990.
I bought a 6" version when they were first introduced and then traded it off for a 6" 617 when they were introduced shortly after.
