I have a 625 (45acp). I just got back from the range and had better that a 50% failure rate with my ammo. I noticed on the failures that the primer had barely been touched--a slight indentation, enough to notice, but not enough to fire. On those rounds that did fire, the indentation was nice and solid. Has anyone experienced this problem? The gun is about 6 months old and has about 1000 rounds through it. Thanks for any info you can give me.

First remove the grips and check the strain screw, it should be all the way tight. Often times it will back out and is pretty much the #1 cause of light strikes. Next what type of ammo, factory or reloads? If factory have you changed brands recently? If theyre reloads are the primers seated fully? This is usually the biggest cause with reloads, the first strike seats the primer and robs energy from the hammer.

Fired empties have deeper dented primers because the case upon firing is being further driven into the firing pin. If the case didn't physically slam the pin in firing it would also have a light strike appearance.

I agree. I had much the same problem- checked the mainspring screw & found it had loosened.

Try tightening it first, my bet this will solve your FTF

I had the exact issue with a previous Smith I owned. Now the first thing I do is check the strain screw and Blue Loctite that sucker in.

RE

+1 to previous suggestions and I'll add that if you are shooting reloads it's possible that some of the primers weren't seated fully.

FYI--I'm using plastic moon clips, no reloads, all factory ammo. I removed the grips and found that the strain screw WAS loose. I tightened and and am going back to the range on Saturday. I'll let you know theoutcome... THANKS EVERYONE!

I purchased a 625PC in December 2012 and went to the range again this week. Third time out for the gun. Superaccurate and fun gun to shoot. The 625PC began producing light hits on the primer on this last range session. About 200 rounds into this new weapon. This was occuring with handloads and factory (Hornady) using steel full moon clips, and with some hand loads in 45AR.

Pulled the grip and found the strain screw backed out 1.5 revolutions from down tight. I screwed the strain screw in to max and then locktited it. This should solve the problem. Will find out next week when I go to the range.

I shot a new 625 PC that came from the factory with strain screw loose. I had light strikes and pulled grips and found strain screw loose. Tightned screw and problem solved.

Finally made it to the range....

after I tightened the screw inside the grips (tension screw?). The gun had no failures!-- thanks to all for the info on fixing the issue.
