Hello Everyone,
I am new to the boards, I have a Model 629-1, Could anyone tell me if this revolver is a N frame, and the manufacture date of the gun,
Also is this a Lew Horton Build, I see many for sale that look just like mine that claim to be Lew Horton,

Thanks in advance

Nice pics and a nice gun!

TAROMAN is correct - the only way to know if Lew Horton was the distributor is to contact them. [email protected]

There was a recall on these because of some bad steel in a few cylinders, but your serial number is not one of the suspect guns. These .44 Combat Magnums were somewhat limited production and are fairly desirable today. It seems Lew Horton had the exclusive on them and ordered a quantity (5000?), but ended up not taking them all. It really doesn't matter which distributor handled it, it's the same gun.

I picked one up a while back with an earlier serial number (ANA9167) and LH said it wasn't one of theirs. Fortunately, mine wasn't part of the recall either. I like the figure in your grips better than mine! :)

Thanks for the info, I had one of these years ago in a 41 Mag, I am thinking it may have been a Model 657, I have kicked myself many times for not keeping the 41 mag but I am sure we have all done that. Hopefully someone will be able to tell me the mfg. date.
Thanks again for the info, it is very helpfull.

FYI, S&W dates are ship dates - they don't really track manufacturing dates. Do you have the box? The Spec Ord code on the end label is a Julian style date code and is probably the close thing to a manufacturing date you can get. If not, my guess on a shipping date would 1987 (+/- a year).

Hello S&WChad,
No I don't have the box or anything that came with the gun when new. Thanks for that info, I was not aware that Smith only tracked ship dates and not mfg dates.

Hello,
Thanks for all the input on my 629,
I called Smith & Wesson for info and they were very helpfull,
I was told:
The gun was put in the vault on: 07/06/88 and shipped on: 7/15/88
I also contacted Lew Horton Distributing and was told:
Unfortunately this serial number is not a Lew Horton’s gun.
No big deal for me, just nice to know the background.
Thanks again for all the input

629 info

I was not aware of any recalls on these guns. If I could get some more info, it would be greatly appreciated. I have two 629-1s.

I found this thread to be very interesting and valuable. I own a 6" 629-1 with serial number prefix "AFC" which indicates it is included in the list of recalled guns. I have its box but I keep them at our son's as he has more storage space than we do at the condo we downsized into in 2011, so I can't look at the label to see if it is stamped with a red "C." But from reading the thread the posted link takes you to, I learned that the "V" I see stamped into the cylinder of every S&W revolver I own means that the cylinder was hardness tested and passed.

I have always been curious about that and it's nice to know what it indicates!

Ed
