Well. i'm finally the owner of the Mod 631 I have long admired (or even lusted for). Its serial number begins with alpha BFN and although it came with original box, wrapper and the black plastic trigger guard plug, there was no paperwork included and no tools. It came to me with a set of Pachmayr grips that the OP couldn't remember whether original or not. In the space on the box label for grips was only a letter S.

I'm not likely to chase after the paper nor even the tools, but I would like to know whether the Pachs are original, even though I've already decided to put a pair of factory J targets on until I can find a set of the Thai combat grips I favor. Any info about what originally came in the box or original grips would be most appreciated. TIA!

Thanks, Kingspoke! I had a pair of those on another J frame for a while, "way back when". Oddly I could never warm up to their flat sides and slightly strange (for me) angle. I may look for a set just to complete the package, but there is an aftermarket set of combats I like much better. ;)
Now what about docs and tools? Was there a round keychain style SAT or did it have the flat blade? Cleaning rod, mop and brush? What documentation?
Thanks again for all info!

631

Hey Frogy
Did you find a 4" or 2"? You found a hard-to-find gun no matter what barrel length. There were 5474 guns made in 1990 only! Can help with the tools, mine came without tools also!

631 Kit Gun - I love the tight tolerances of it's assembly!

Good questions! The only part I know for certain is that it came with the mop, bore brush, & cleaning rod (unopened, as depicted). I don't recall what if any paperwork. I traded this one, plus a non P.C 646 to get my grail gun, 646 PC.

I love the 631 as well, and plan on getting another one, despite the outrageous prices, they bring! Serves me right!:D
Hopefully, one of the 631 experts on this forum will chime in!

Fond memories of my 1st 631!:)

Looking at Picture #2 I can see the end of a final style SAT peeking out from under the bore brush. It's the little flat bar with a screwdriver tip on each end. Now I feel pretty comfortable about the tool set.

I guess I really won't be too concerned about the paperwork that came with it unless there was something really unusual or unique about what came specifically with this model's release.

The final question for now is to repeat the marking on the box's label, under grips the capital letter S… does that mean "Standard", ie the GA Combats? Does anyone know of any guns coming from the factory with grips other than the combats? I know the Model 60-4 came with Uncle Mike's black rubber version of combats, for instance.

I too looked for a 631 (4-inch) for a LONG time. I never saw any indication they ever shipped with any stocks other than the smooth combats pictured elsewhere in this thread.

I don't recall my gun coming with anything other than the usual "boilerplate" papers. I'd probably remember if it did.

They're great revolvers. I wish they had been made with black sights, but I'm happy with my gun as-is. Congratulations on your new to you 631! :)

S&W 631 Kit Gun in .32 H&R - Who has one?

On this one, sequentially, it's abbreviations are (S) for Stainless Finish (Fin.) - (RB) for Round Butt (Stock)s, etc.

Great spot on the pics, as you are right about the SAT.:)

Congratulations Green Frog on finally acquiring a model 631! I know from following your posts how long you've been on the hunt.

The 631, both 2" & 4" came with the combat stocks. The 2" Ladysmith version had the standard round butt magna stocks. Included with the revolver, wrapped in S&W vapor paper, was a toolkit, warranty card, and a universal Smith & Wesson revolver instruction booklet. All packaged in a one piece "Double Action Revolver box. The toolkit consisted of a straight cleaning rod knurled on one end, a bore brush, a bore mop, and a sight adjusting tool. The blue steel sight adjusting tool was marked "Smith & Wesson Since 1852" (two lines) on one side and "Sight Adjust Only" (three lines) with the Smith & Wesson logo on the reverse side. It is hole punched for a keychain and has a different screwdriver tip at each end.

The cost new on April 6, 1991 was $296.00 for BEZ27xx 4"

A couple guys beat me to it, but here is the paperwork and tools that came with mine. I did not purchase it new but it was described by seller as "as new in box.

OK, so the documentation includes a standard Warranty sheet, a standard Instruction sheet, and the blue survey sheet as well as a booklet of advertisements for "Apparel and Firearms Accessories".

I was correct about the SAT, and it's nice to see the details of the brush and swab. I had forgotten the change to a no-loop cleaning rod by that time. That will probably be the hardest item to find... I have several of the earlier style, but can't remember ever having one of the later, knurled ones. That little bar type SAT is getting thin on the ground here too... I think people disliked their cheap looks and discarded them.

Thanks all for your contributions. I'm sure others having similar revolvers of this vintage will also be able to benefit.

Froggie

PS the gun as gotten and the label on the box.

Glad you got your 631. You will enjoy it.
Left my broken 2 inch with a great mechanic, hope for some good news soon.

I haven't cleaned it yet, but I think that's sight black because even the red ramp insert is darkened.

OK Froggie, any idea of the history of this gun? The Big Sky sticker on the side of the box raises some questions for this MT resident.
