Hello Forum - I have a S&W 645 (TAK serial number series) with a plastic mainspring housing. I am interested in acquiring a metal housing if such a thing is available. Can anyone advise whether a metal housing is available? Thanks.

I think at one time there was a plastic housing available for the 645/745 that had an arch similar to a model 39 or 52. I have not seen this but a friend that had a 745 had this part on his, makes the pistol feel like a 52 according to what I was told. Forgive me if I am in error, it has been years since I thought about it.

Although my 645 mainspring housing appears to be a gray plastic, it is possible that it is an alloy. Any information will be appreciated.

My 645, TBA12XX, has an alloy mainspring housing. The checkering on it was raised so much that it was damned uncomfortable to shoot. Filed the checkering down then recut it with some very fine files. Also recontoured the arch towards the top of the backstrap. Added a set of wood grips that are substantially thicker than the factory plastic things and it feels much better in the hand now.
