What would make a model 66-1 with a 2 5/8" barrel be worth $2,200 dollars in a Denver gun store ?
I can think of several reasons the measurement was wrong, but management says it's good.
What do you think.

Without photographs of the firearm in question I think that is a something that the Store's Management needs to be asked

There are lots of things that would make it worth $2,200 . . . . . . .

If it is documented as the very first one it could be worth that

If it were Factory Engraved it would easily be worth that

If it was the carry gun of Elvis Presley it could be worth that

If it was a factory made one off, 2 5/8" barreled revolver it could be worth that

2 5/8" sounds like a 2 1/2" S&W revolver barrel that was at the long end of their barrel length tolerance. If it is just a run-of-the-mill Model 66-1, I don't think it is worth $2200. If it is something special, it needs to have proper documentation. Without documentation, it's just a story and I think there have been plenty of stories sold and then the new owner finds out they bought a fairy tale, not something that was true.

In the 38 years I’ve lived in the Denver area I’ve found a few stores that put stupid prices on their used/consignment guns. If you’re comfortable sharing which shop either here or through a pm I’d appreciate it, would like to go see it for myself.

One store has about 15-20 Smiths from the prior store owner that I feel are a bit overpriced.

I found a 2-1/2" M66-1 ANIB at a gun show and paid $1200 for it, thinking it was a bit overpriced, but it rang all the bells of what I was looking for and I had yet to see one that nice.

I agree the barrel length is just a 2-1/2" that is cut slightly long. The barrel on mine is 2-7/16" when measured precisely, and isn't going to add or detract value.

Does the one in the store for $2200 have the box, papers and accessories to attempt justifying that price? I wouldn't give that for the first one made.

I paid $400 for this one with the grips shown, box, tools, magna grips and paperwork about 12 years ago. It had been fired 6 times though. (It belonged to an elected Sheriff in NC who carried a 1911 and only shot one cylinder through it and put it in the office safe. I bought it from a subsequent Sheriff of the county who bought it when they transitioned to new weapons).

I might consider selling it for $2200.

Terry:

My guess is that it is a magical 66 that left the factory with a 2 4/8" (2.5") barrel that magically GREW over the past 40+ years to 2 5/8". At that rate of growth, if someone were to own it for another 100-150 years it would grow to become a 3" barreled 66-1 and THAT would probably be worth $2,200. So... I think what the gun store is selling is "potential".:D:rolleyes: That said, if in nice condition, with its 2 5/8" barrel, it is probably worth $1K or a little more in this market.

BTW - tell your brother hello.

It’s shocking what the M66 goes for these days. I paid $600 for a NIB 4” 1973 M66 w/stainless sights, combat & magna grips a few years ago.

It's "worth" that because that's what the present owner thinks it's worth. Rather he really expects to get that is a question only he can answer. My guess, he just wants to show it off, but if someone is willing to meet his price, he'll sell it.

If it was a 3" the price would be closer to reality.....

Just sayin'...

If it started out as a 3" and a previous owner cut it to the ultra rare length of 2 5/8" then it really would be a $600 gun... :(

I was at sale this past summer and saw a gun I was interested in with no tag. I enquired the price ( should have been $300-$400 range) guy told me he was looking for $700. After glancing at my watch I told him if I hadn’t had to be home for supper I would stay and help him “ look “
I guess people decided they might as well put out their gun at ridiculously high price, some idiot might buy it.

Just imagine how much you could now charge for the even more rare, not to say "unique" (!) barrel extension, to restore that 600-dollar gun to its former 3-inches! :p:D
