Model 669

Stopped at a new Gander Mtn Gun Store in town last week, in the hope of something not being outrageously priced. The new pistols were predictably high, and I even saw a used Ruger MkII for 699.00!.

But I also saw a used Smith 669, good shape, one magazine, no box, with a grip sleeve on it, cutaway to fit the magazine. Only 250.00. Usually I don't go for single side safety/decockers, being a lefty, but this felt ok, even with the plastic grips, and I figured I'd just leave the safety off, like my Beretta.

So, I did the paperwork (on their computer), and then they printed it out and had me sign it as well. I watched as they tried to put a trigger lock on it. I said don't worry about it fitting, I'm throwing it away when I get to the car anyhow. The three lady clerks looked shocked. Then they decided to double wrap the pistol in two plastic bags. I said usually, I just tuck it in my waistband and leave. Again the shocked looks.

Finally the clerk took it, said she'd meet me at the door, and we walked separately to the exit (her from behind the long counter) and I walked out with the pistol. I put a hundred rounds through it last week and liked it. I shoot it a little better than I do my 3953. Found some mags from a guy on the board here, and I'm all set.

Nice 669! There was a recall on the gun (manual safety) years ago. I see by your serial # that yours was in the affected grouping. Go to FirearmsID.com- An Introduction to Forensic Firearm Identification and look under the heading "Firearm Recalls & Warnings Index". I had to send mine back, no biggee.
Also, several were affected by frame failure. There was a post started on 12/2011 on this forum (S & W Semi-Auto Pistols)with pics.
Now the good news: you got a great deal on yours! On mine, the trigger pull in the SA mode is light & predictable. Very nice shooter! Never sell it.

I'm surprised she didn't make you stand outside and throw the gun to you. Dames!

Since the 669 is the fore runner of the 6906, I suspect it's a dream to shoot.

I'd carry my 6906, but it's a bit bulky for IWB for my tastes. Besides, I have a pre rail 3913TSW that fits the concealed carry bill for me.

That has nothing to do with this thread, but it does give me a chance to say that I have a pre rail 3913TSW.

I'm curious as to why you chose a "thumbs down" icon for this thread. I have been wanting a 469/669 for many years, and I wondered what had caused the negative comment. Now I don't see any!

Congrat's on a nice find. Maybe there's still hope for me.

I also read the recall notice and mine decocks properly according to that, so I should be ok. I read about the rails possibly peening, if that's the problem you meant, and I'll try to remember to lube them properly. Mbliss, I'll pm you, thanks. Other guys, thanks for the confirmation on getting a good deal. The DA pull is very long, but you're right, the SA is short and great. It's a keeper.

i have had mine since they first came out, early 1980s i think. got the ambi safety from smith since i shoot leftie. in box wth all paperwork 2 mags,etc. i remember i traded in a satin nickel colt .45 commander on it. i hated the 669s plastic grips and added pachmayers to it, what a big improvement!

S & W 669 Grips

I have owned a Smith & Wesson model 669 for many years, it has been an excellent pistol and one of my favorites. I installed Gen3 grips on my 669, it took a little grinding with a dremel tool on the base of the grip, they fix great and look good. I also have two mags from a Model 59 with extended base that works great and gives me 16 rounds with one in the pipe. It is a tad bit heavy with 16 rounds but I have a Galco Holster that works really well. I have never had a single malfunction with this pistol and have shot hundreds of rounds through it.
