I was given a K-22 Outdoorsman last night with an SN on the butt of 659xxx. So I would guess it would place near the end of the 1st model production run.????

There is another number stamped under the crane that is different than the SN. This number is 114xx.

Can someone tell me the year of manufacturer and what does the number under the crane represent and why is not the same as the SN stamped on the butt.

Don't have my serial number reference at hand but the number in the crane area is an assembly number not the serial number. Serial should be found on the butt, rear of cylinder, inside of the extractor star, bottom of barrel, rear of crane looking through the cylinder and possibly on the inside of the right grip. John

659,xx should have shipped late 1936 or early 1937. (maybe) Only a letter or a call to S&W will tell for sure.
It should have a Stainless Call bead front sight and the "late" style rear sight (with a hold down screw near the front of the assembly and two adjustment screws near the rear.)
If is configured as something different, please let me know so I can update my database.

BTW; the highest K-22 Outdoorsman serial I have recorded so far is 682,xxx which probably shipped in late 1939 or early 1940.
{Even though the K22 Masterpiece 2nd model started production in 1940, I'm sure there are some leftover 1st Models that shipped at later dates. Nothing is neat and clean with S&W.)

I will have to clean up the revolver and post a picture to this thread. It doesn't have the stainless bead on the front site. Its a ramped black blade style. I'm pretty sure its a K-22 outdoorsman.

Bren:
Does it have a rib on top of the barrel or a K prefix before the rest of the serial number?
Ed

No, smooth top and no K.

It has square-butt, five screw, six shot fluted cylinder, blue finish, 6 inch pinned barrel, no rib, floating firing pin, flat face hammer. Smooth semi round top strap with adjustable rear sight. Small S&W medallion on frame.

Time for a picture. It doesn't have to be pretty, just clear and detailed.

Here's the revoler I was talking about when I started this thread. I belive its a K22 Outdoorsman First Model, if not please correct me. I also was wondering about the ramped front sight? Most K22's I see have a patridge front sight. Its really not worth a factory letter to me to find out the answer if this front sight is original or not but I thought some of you could add some insight.

Bren:

What a neat K-22 Outdoorsman 1st model. i have a couple of these, both of which have the stainless call front bead in a patridge sight. The front sight looks like the blade has been replaced, perhaps with one of the "King" models - but it could have been done at the factory and shipped that way.

Here is a page from the King catalog with some of their sights:

It would be worth a letter if it were mine.

Most likely the front sight is just the factory sight that someone modified because he got tired of it ripping his holster- or his belly if he liked to carry in his pants!

Been there- Done THAT....
The ramp is not serrated, and if I am seeing it correctly, part of the hole for the call bead is still there?????? I see a dot that looks like the hole, anyway.

That K-22 cleaned up real well. That's a very nice gun. I would also letter it - if it were mine.

Regards, Jerry
