Model number question

Question for you S&W guys. I am more of a Colt fan myself but have decided I want a stainless J frame for my every day carry gun. I intend to but crimson trace grips on it and it will be carried IWB. What model am I looking for - I am confused by all the Smith model numbers. I already have a SB and RB Model 36 but they are both blued. It can be 357 or 38 but I will be carrying 38 in it.

I don't like the looks of new bodyguards (thus the request for stainless) so you can eliminate them from the conversation.

Almost all S&W stainless revolver numbers begin with a "6".

The stainless equivalent to your Model 36 is the Model 60. The current production (with internal lock) is in .357 Magnum with a 2 1/8" barrel.

If you wanted a hammerless version, you would be looking for a Model 640.

S&W is currently producing the Model 642 Airweight without the internal lock and prices are quite reasonable on these. They have a stainless steel barrel and cylinder and an aluminum alloy frame. They weigh about 15 ounces unloaded. They are almost identical in size to your Model 36's.

Look for a Model 60, the older ones are essentially a Model 36 in stainless steel.

or a 649! gotta love the shrouded hammer. stainless is definitely the best bet for a true carry gun.

(oh, i assume you mean you don't like the "new" bodyguard. the 649 is the stainless "old" bodyguard!)

For carry, you should probably look at the 642.

It's a lightweight hammerless pistol that is perfect for carry (for those two reasons).
Stainless is fine, but heavier, and you WILL feel the difference when you carry.

You can even get it without the silly lock which you may or may not prefer.

I've got two older Model 60's that I bought in the early 80's, but the hammerless design of the 642 makes a bit more sense for carry because you won't have to worry about snagging a hammer on your clothes.
One 642 rotates as one of my carry pistols, and the other one I have is a bedside pistol. The 642 is an all-around great SD pistol no matter how you want to use it.
