“Modified “ Registered Magnum

paplinker, the serial number is complete and untouched on the butt. Numbers also match on cylinder, barrel and yoke.

And this would be a good time to remind everyone on these old prewar guns with the smaller weird font to make sure you`re reading the serial numbers right side up!

Any time you can score a registered magnum you can shoot without feeling bad about it is a win in my book. I`m glad you got it and I`m glad you found it before I did- because I`m weak and I probably would have bought it whether I needed another refinished shootable reg mag or not. Then I might`ve been too broke to bid come auction time where they had something I didn`t already have and definitely needed...

Here is an example of that Super Police front sight by the way. (on my 4" transitional .44 spl target.) I have a snubby around here somewhere too with that sight on it and I really like them.

Oh and whatever you do, don`t have that RM barrel cut down to 4 1/4" or 4 1/2" or then you`ll have to add something else to your list of stuff I want to try and trade you out of one of these days.

I was reminded of that lesson recently with a newly acquired Regulation Police when asking Roy Jinks for a ship date...That old font, deeply stamped, makes 3's look like 5's sometimes, so when the ship date didn't seem right I had to re-examine it with a magnifying glass, and re-ask the question...It made a 30 year difference in the ship date...:o...Ben

The letter arrived today on RM #2535. It was ordered by and shipped to Marshall Field & Company Chicago, IL July 28, 1937. Nothing special comes to light.

Tim,
Did you check to see if other documents were available for your Registered Magnum? Most of the time order form and invoice available and frequently other documents.

Just for instance my gun went to Potchernick's in San Antonio, Texas. Ho hum.
Because of a repair letter from Potchernick's to S&W eventually determined the gun had belonged to James C (Doc) White, Texas Ranger and FBI Special Agent.

N frame size Farrant style stocks will not be easy to find but if you decide to go that route you may be very happy when you shoot the RM. I have several examples of the stocks and if they fit your hand, they were all custom fit, they feel great to shoot. The pics show a Target masterpiece with John Hurst made stocks and a Colt Officers Model match with early Fuzzy Farrant made stocks, both are clipped frames and both have been refinished.
