Better than holding 4 aces! I passed on a very nice one a few years ago because the grip serial number was mis-matched…..I blame it on too much leftover “Colt collector” in my blood at the time.😄

There were at least 3 types of front sights that were shaped the same. The plain front sight was called Patridge. The flat gold front sight was a Call (named after Charlie Call), and the McGivern front sight was the only one with a pronounced round bead. It was said that Ed stated one could see the exposed bead much clearer and it showed up much better in daylight hours.

I am not certain, but think that in order to be called a McGivern Model, it had to have Ed's extended gold bead front sight. Maybe it was just the 5: barrel that qualifies the gun as McGivern??

Hey Gary
I believe you are correct. But from a previous posts an esteemed member here shared that this stance has softened just a bit. And Essentially if it’s a 5” OD regardless of front sight it’s ok today to call it a McGivern. :)
But I’m definitely not the expert. I first learned of this configuration only a few years ago.

And still learning. With thanks to RK I became aware of the Heavy Duty Target. Which I do not yet have. Most of these HD Targets were likely not shipped as a Target models but returned later for modification to Target configuration.

RK pointed out to me the difference between the OD and the HD Target is the smooth grip strap on the HD Target vs the grooved grip frame on the OD. I completely over looked this !

There was a modified HD Target at the recent symposium in Tulsa but my bid in absence was not the winner. This gun included letters from Dr. Jinks “emphatically” explaining to a previous owner this gun was NOT shipped in the target configuration. lol.

Going off memory from reading prior posts at least one of these HD Targets was converted prior to shipping. That would be a neat gun to have !

Stunning and super cool!
5 inch N frames are perfection! The fact that they’re ODs is icing on the cake. Thanks for sharing!
