It is now officially spring here in the Hoosier state, I found our first batch of yellow morels this mrng. We are running a couple of weeks behind our normal sched due to cool temp's, but it has warmed up now with warm temps and warmer nights. Gonna have these with some fresh caught channel catfish & a cold beer or two this evening. Don't get any better.

This makes me hungry. Gonna open a packet of ramen noodles/soup. Oh wait! Forgot about the Stouffer's fish filet entree in the freezer. For dessert, I can open that can of pear slices that's been sitting in the pantry.

An embarrassment of riches!

P.S. Never even heard of morels. Do you actually eat things that look like that!?

This thread reminds me of being 8-10 years old and walking the woods at our friend's farm near Rockville. Morels do grow here in Alaska but only for a year or so after large fires which really scorch the woods.

Love morals but I'm a lousy hunter of them too. I must have them on my property but just don't seem to locate any.
I do remember finding a bunch when I was a kid and meeting back up with the adults that took us there. They had huge sacks full but wouldn't tell us where they found them either. I ate so many that time around I think I got sick. My brother has had good luck at his place especially around his ash trees that died.

I have never had much luck finding them out in the woods. But I have some friends with more skill, and my offer is always the same. Bring over the fungi, and I'll pick up the rib-eye, open and good bottle (or two) and even do the cooking.....

I've had no luck finding them either. The only time I HAVE found some was by accident, and then, only one or two. All of my life I have looked while roaming the spring woods to no avail. I live in 20 acres of mainly dead and dying ash and check daily. Some of you have really found some good ones!!

That's because you have lived in the big cities too long my friend.....sliced in half...soaked for 24 hrs, dipped in some flour/egg/beer batter...into the hot grease in a cast iron skillet and Viola!! Exquisite.
Just so happens I am having a portion of morels for dinner, the morels are the light crispy entrees with a side of grilled Ribeye and a barley flavored libation.
It rained here today.....tomorrow....back into the woods.
Be safe.

You sure know how to hurt a guy, what I wouldn't give to find a batch of Morels in my area. Enjoy my friend.

Never heard of them before. They look....interesting. I guess we don't get them this far south. If I every find any I'll give 'em a try. I love the little white ones and the portobellos and the Japanese sitake 'shrooms.

Glad I saw this post cause if I'd ever seen any I'd have been a skeert to try 'em. Don't want to wind up like Clint Eastwood did in Beguiled.

At least I'm not digging under tree stumps and rocks for my next meal! Stay safe.

I only let them soak for 30 minutes to an hour in salt water, slice them in half, bread them (with beaten eggs as the batter), then fried in butter with some garlic salt. I prefer them on the crunchy side (not burnt). I hate mushrooms but the Morels have a nutty flavor unlike any other mushroom. They are like $50 per pound down here at the Whole Foods/Farmers Markets.

My better half is addicted to the hunt and is out almost everyday looking for morels this time of year. We spent three hours scouring the forest floor yesterday looking for morels. It was a good morning and we collect about 10 lbs.

Here is few pics from yesterday. The first shows why it is hard to find morels. They had very well.

I'm jealous. Dang, those are supper looking shrooms! I found ONE yellow morel in the woods in my sister's yard last year.
Just ONE. So I followed directions I found online to create a spore laced "broth".
I read it can take years for the mycelium mat to form.
I asked just last week if any morels had popped up in the places I sprayed the mix.
Nope. But I'm hopeful.

Oh man, this thread is making my mouth WATER.

I remember the neighbors giving us some morels back when I was a young kid, and my folks frying them up. Only time before or since I are them, but the taste was so unique and unforgettable that it lingers on in my memory till this day. Simply divine.

Because of this morels have always piqued my interest, but I never went looking for them myself till a couple weeks ago here in Eastern Kansas. No luck. The soil was a bit dry... we've had a lot of rain since then and it just rained tonight. Has been a tad warmer to, but I'm not sure if it's still morel season here or not. I might hit the woods tomorrow again just to see if I can find anything.
