Mosin Nagant project

Not kidding at all, I've been handling firearms for over 50 years and don't recall any negative comments about sporterizing other firearms, but when someone mentions a Mosin it seems to provoke all types of emotions.
But, I may have led a sheltered life

I dare you to go to one of the SKS forums and tell them you have a non refurb 1953 Izhevsk and that you want to thread the barrel for a muzzle brake, drop into a Tapco stock and put a 40 round magazine on.

I'm just trying to point out that there are other forums that would rip your head off for mentioning any type of modification of their particular milsurp. You stated you never heard of a negative comment for doing such. Handling firearms for 50 years and make a statement like that, You haven't been dealing with milsurps for 50 years, NO WAY, NO HOW.

Trust me, this has been a very civilized thread about what the OP is doing. I'm a purist, no doubt, but it all boils down to the fact that it's the OP's rifle and he can do what he wants with it.

Trust me, this has been a very civilized thread about what the OP is doing. I'm a purist, no doubt, but it all boils down to the fact that it's the OP's rifle and he can do what he wants with it.

Over at the Mosin forum I would likely be banned for even posting a picture of my rifle, let alone starting a thread to discuss the build.

I think everyone here (even those who don't approve) has been very respectful.

Well, it was 7 degrees at the range this morning with some wind and a little snow. The scope needs to be shimmed a little but I wasn't really concerned with getting it dialed in, I just wanted to function test it and make sure everything was OK.

I was very happy with the way it performed overall though. It took a few shots to get on paper but once it did it was pretty respectable. Once I get the scope all straightened out I'll start messing around with adjustments for accuracy. I'm just happy it went "Bang" every time I pulled the trigger.

Thank you all for the kind words. I had a good time building this rifle and I'm looking forward to getting it all dialed in and putting lots of rounds down range with it (when it gets a little warmer).[emoji6]

Ammo was PPU.
Range is Easton Fish and Game.
Currently the barrel is free floating but, the Arch Angel has an adjustable barrel tensioner towards the end of the stock so, once I get a chance to spend some time with it, I'll be able tune it a bit.

A little bit of an update. On my first range trip with the Mosin it was 7° and breezy. The gun was shooting 2' low and I had to put a makeshift shim under the rear scope ring to get it on paper.

When I got home I pulled the rail off and made some adjustments to level it out a bit. I also replaced the rings with a set of adjustable rings to give me a little more wiggle room.

I was supposed to head to the range last weekend but at the last minute the plans fell through. I've been itching to get the rifle out again and also test out a Coach Gun I had picked up so today, on a whim, I headed out to a local 50 yard indoor range that's pretty close. I hate going there because it's always crowded (and I have to pay by the hour) but I had to test these guns out.

Anyway, I put 50 rounds through it before switching to the shotgun. The barrel was smoking hot when I was done.... It was a good 10 minutes before I could even put it back in the case.

I didn't dial it in perfectly, I just got it close enough since I was under time constraints. I figure I'm gonna have to make adjustments when I get it out to 100 yards anyway.

So, here's a 15 shot group (indoors) at 50 yards with milsurp ammo.

THAT'S GREAT, Budasec. A CLICK OVER TO THE LEFT, AND THAT GROUP MIGHT BE SOLIDLY IN THE X RING. DEPENDING ON THE EFFECT OF ONE CLICK, YOUR GROUP MAY BE A REPEAT OF THE ONE YOU SHOT--ONLY THIS TIME AT THE LEFT SIDE OF THE X RING…..

I SOMETIMES DRIVE MYSELF CRAZY TRYING TO GET SHOTS PERFECTLY CENTERED IN THE X RING, WITH AN OPTIC THAT IS NOT CAPABLE OF THAT FINE OF AN ADJUSTMENT. SOME OPTICS, ON LOW RECOILING FIREARMS, WILL HOLD A POSITION 1/2 WAY BETWEEN CLICKS. I DOUBT IF THAT WILL BE THE SITUATION WITH THE MOISIN. IN THAT CASE, YOU MUST PICK THE SCOPE SETTING THAT GIVES YOU THE LEAST DEVIATION FROM PERFECTLY CENTERED, AND LIVE WITH IT. COMBAT / HUNTING ACCURACY IS LESS PRECISE THAN TARGET ACCURACY. YOU CERTAINLY HAVE EXCELLENT COMBAT / HUNTING ACCURACY, AND VERY RESPECTABLE TARGET ACCURACY . IMHO, YOU DID AN OUTSTANDING JOB. THAT RIFLE IS SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF. IT SHOULD PERFORM VERY WELL AT LONGER DISTANCES, IF YOU DO YOUR PART…...
