Guys what all calibers were the mountain guns made in, I have the model 25 and the model 57, I know they may not be as collectable as others, but I like em and would like to get em all. And which of the ones other than the 2 I have were offered in a blue finish, thanks

.44 Magnum, .41 Magnum, .357 Magnum, .45 Long Colt, .45 ACP. The .357 is an L-Frame.

Yeah I know the 629 44 mag, I'm tryin to find a model 29.. Blue finish, I just didn't know how many were offered in blue, I hope all of em were..

I love my mod 25 45 colt, I reload for it, gettin good results with it, I have most all the stuff to reload for my mod 57 41 mag. Right now I'm tryin to see how many were offered in the blue Finnish.

Mine are SS in 357/44mag/45acp/45LC....& I reckon .44 spl if you want count the 4" 624.........I skipped on buying the .41 since I have no interest in that caliber.

Yep, a Mountain Gun in all aspects save for the roll stamping:

Well I am a 625 mountain gun guy. Had mine cut for moon clips by TK custom so I can now shoot 45 ACP also. Nice shooting revolver!!!

My Mountain Gun is a .44 Rem. Mag. Model 29. I shoot both .44 Special and .44 Rem. Mag. The MG is accurate and fun to shoot. I'd like to add a .45 Colt and a .44 Special some day.

There was a mod 24 45 colt on gunbroker not long ago, I forget now what they wanted for it. It was a blued Finnish, if that matters. Me I like the blue..

Where's the 4", tapered barrel, 8 shot, 27/627 Mountain Gun? I would have thought that was no brainer.

There were definately Model 29 Mountain guns, all were blue finish.

There have been some threads on MG's in the past where we discussed which features were common on All factory made Mountain Guns .....
IIRC the common features are 4" tapered barrel with shrouded ejector rod, smooth combat trigger, semi target hammer, RB grip frame, target sites , blue Baughman FS blade and says Mountain Gun on the barrel.
the rest come and go on different versions but the litmus test of what makes a S&W "Mountain Gun" is if it says it on the barrel .

For instance the 629-2 "Mountain Revolver" while the grandaddy to all "Mountain Guns" has the common features plus some others but does not say "Mountain Gun" on the barrel so IMO is not a "Mountain gun" .

The 624 is not a Mountain gun, neither is the Model 24 or the Model 27.

The 629-2 says "MOUNTAIN" under Features on the box label, that's what makes it a Mountain Gun even though it isn't printed on the barrel.

I suppose its a matter of nomenclature but while having "Mountain Gun" features the 629-2 pre dates the Mountain Gun and according to S&W is actually called a "Mountain Revolver" ..... not the same name as "Mountain Gun" but almost ...IMO kinda like being "Almost pregnant"... ;)

The Model 686-5 Mountain Gun is unique in that is the only L frame, only 7 shot and only version in a caliber that doesnt begin with the number "4",
also since the 686-5 was the first L frame M.G. and had the new frame mounted firing pin, smooth tangs and MIM internals ,
no L frame version exists with forged internals, a hammer mounted firing pin and serrated tangs ....
Well...none that left the factory that way anyways :

IIRC there was a 6 shot IL version as well ?

"IIRC there was a 6 shot IL version as well ?"

Yes, there was.

I bought my .45 ACP Model 625-6 Mountain Gun from the marketplace on this forum. It was advertised as "New/unfired in box." After he shipped it, but before I received it, he had to e-mail me to "brag" (his word) that he took it out and shot it before he shipped it. Didn't clean it. It mildly irritated me, but I let it slide because they were of limited production and hard to find.

I like the Mountain Guns a lot, I have them in .357 (7 shot), .44 Mag, .45 ACP and.45 Colt. Since these are natural holster guns and ought to spend their lives out in the woods, I prefer stainless steel, even if mine just mostly live in the safe!

Yes, an 8-shot Model 627 Mountain Gun would have been great, but the closest they made had a 1955 Target-style barrel profile, and they only made it for a year.

I have a "one of 20" 629-1 square butt "Special Mountain Gun" made on a special order by RSR. I like it a lot!

Do you have the box with the product code marked on it ?
Also is it marked as a 629-1 and have you got a ship date yet ?
Just guessing that it shipped after 1989 ....

Engine 49guy,
It's a strange gun. I bought it because it was just cool. In researching it, I got even more confused. It's a 629-1 with a S/N BAN8XXX which would make it around early 1988 production. I called S&W with the serial number and was transferred to the guru himself, Roy Jinks, and spoke to him at length (nice guy).
He said it was a product code 103619 and was one of 40 (not 20) consigned by RSR Group in Aug. 1998. They were designated as "Special Mountain Gun" with square butt, tapered barrel, bead blasted finish, pinned front sight and this one has smooth Goncalo Alves Magnas.
No idea why a 629-1 frame of 1988 vintage was resurrected as a 1998 Special Mountain Gun - but who knows for sure. (Roy said S&W is very "Frugal" and assumed they had enough extra 629-1 frames in stock for a small production run).
(I've sent for a letter of authenticity from Roy)

Is this the one? It never occurred to me it was an almost Mountain gun. By all accounts it was a slow seller. Maybe with the Mountain gun name it would have apealed to more people.

Yep, that's the one I meant. I would love to buy one of them.

Thanks for the update, Figured it was assembled from parts inventory and explains the 629-1 frame with a satin 629-2 Mountain Revolver barrel with no laser MG name on the R side, ... the proof it was assembled after the 629-2 Mountain Revolver run is the ship date IMO....Cool gun !

Love all Mountain guns, Mountain revolvers and S&W revolvers with Mountain features !
MM1313 there is another blue .44 Magnum with MG features in the pre Pre IL, Pre Mim 29-6 SWCA 25th anniversary gun, some were even sold non embellished but IIRC they do not say "Mountain Gun" on the barrel.

BTW Roe, Im not disrespecting the 629-2 Mountain Revolver just a stickler for nomenclature and IMO calling a 629-2 "Mountain Revolver" a "Mountain Gun" is like calling a Pre war .357 Magnum a "Pre Model 27" .... ;)
