Moving to VA

With your credentials you may want to apply with the Va state patrol. They also have a shortage. Many of the cities and counties do, as I've already said. Areas like York County and Gloucester have about 1 or 2 murders a year where the cities like Norfolk, Newport News and Portsmouth have at least one a night.

Live in Roanoke area all my life. Have traveled extensively over the years both here and more recently abroad. Hard to find a better place to live than Va.

The state Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) sets standards and regulates all LE and Security Services in the state. You maywish to check with them about how your current certifications will transfer to Va. They have a website.

Some counties take driving over the speed limit very seriously
Henrico County in particular

Seems like they give you a break up to 5mph over, they also don't like drivers impeding traffic on the interstate.

We live a bit west of where your looking to relocate but I assure you VA will not disappoint!

Been around a bit in my time but haven't found any place I'd rather live

Wish everyone from VA had your attitude. Too many moving here in WV making our taxes go up. Of course gas is cheaper in VA. Have relatives is southern VA and it's nice and quiet down there but no work.

Remember Norfolk is a navy town, when we visited our boy in the navy down there several years ago traffic was the pits compared to here where we live but we could carry CCW there, we don't like big cities.

As an aside, some of the BEST fried chicken you will ever have is found at the Southern Kitchen in New Market, a side trip from driving the Blue Ridge. Try their peanut soup too.

The Ordinary, just outside Jefferson's Monticello also has some great fried chicken..........

Have never lived there...... but travel through it quit often.

DC,Norfolk and I-95 are renowned for their crazy stupid traffic.

Western Va ...... Shenandoah Valley area is beautiful country and still not too far from the ocean.

Have you considered N Carolina...... love the Outer Banks area. Still close to Norfolk.

Richmond and Norfolk (nofuk in the local dialect, startled the dickens out of me the first time I heard it) are deep, deep blue. Richmond has some strange firearms laws. However, as noted, there's generally country living available within reasonable driving range. There's also the Quantico area.

Thank y'all, I really do appreciate your comments. I have to look closer into all the opportunities. The main thing is that my wife finds her place of work and I don't know which town it is. I don't mind working in a big city, I just don't wanna live there. I need country and space... away from people.

I will contact the DCJS and see if they give me any credit. If I would go state police than I'm sure I'll have to start completely over. Which is fine. I have to learn abt their laws and regulations anyway.

Oklahoma is pretty laid back on traffic but the county I live in is pretty hardcore on drugs.

I have lived in va my whole life. The state is changing, but still a great place to live. Around Richmond is cool. Can be deep in the mountains or in the gulf stream within 5-6 hours. Inside if 295 and 288, it's more city living, lots if traffic. Outside 295 and 288 it gets country fast. I grew up in new kent, spent last 15 years in Henrico, moving back to new Kent later this year. I actually close in the house this week. Great schools and "close" to everything. Welcome!

If you like water come check out Buggs Island Lake in & around Clarksville in Mecklenburg county. Lowest taxes in the state. 30 minutes from I-85, 2 hrs from Richmond which I'd stay out of at all cost except if you had to go to MCV. 3 hrs from VA Beach, couple hrs from the mountains. Hr from Durham, NC which along with Chapel Hill & Hillsboro have some of the best hospitals in the world. I have first hand knowledge about that. Raleigh is 75 minutes from here. 3+ hrs to the Outer Banks, too. Now as far as yankees moving here, sorry we are full!!!!

Most everything in this thread is accurate, including the above! I grew up in Louisa and now live in the West End of Richmond. PM me if you want anything specific!

Still waiting to hear about the "strange gun laws in Richmond".

Just avoid northern Virginia. Actually, it would help if you did move there.
It's becoming too anti gun.
It's a good state. We battle the antis up north, and will do so long after I'm gone, but despite the Gov. it's a pro gun state.
The northern part controls the legislature but the rest of us control the state.

Here's an update:

Long time no see...

I'd like to thank everyone for participating and especially those who did in fact help me with info, I do appreciate it.

This is what makes this forum great!

I would suggest you do some research on weather, especially in Richmond. Most of the population is Norfolk/Va beach-lots of traffic. There are a lot of financial considerations if you come from a low tax/regulation area. I was raised around some areas you mentioned, and I would not live there. Rural Virginia around the I-81 corridor or west would be my choice.
