Music and Themes From Westerns

Ditto here and--it was the Sons of the Pioneers. I love all their stuff. "Festus" (Ken Curtis) was the lead in the group for awhile--also took over an orchestra that was led by Frank Sinatra.

Another great singer with the Sons of the Pioneers was a guy named Leonard Franklin Slye. Great singer, went on to star in over 100 movies, maybe one of the greatest western screen singing heros of all times.

Can't quite remember his screen name......... ray, no..... ruben... no, Roy.. that's it Roy something..

Roy Rogers, that's it..... :)

I have always been partial to the Sons of Katie Elder main title theme song. A lot of the movies already listed rank right up there for me too.

The Magnificent Seven theme is probably the top one for me though.

So many great old themes for those old westerns.

shouldazagged,

Those Brits did good!

Most of the famous themes are from Ennio Morricone. So called "Spaghetti Westerns" - look for a cd from BMG, c 1990, upc 7863-59974-2, title Ennio Morricone, The Legendary Italian Westerns, The film composers Series Volume 2.

Also Yo-Yo Ma plays Ennio Morricone. Sony Classical upc 8 2796-93456-2 7.
Covers some other than westerns.

Dang, the neighbors will be hacked off, I'm gonna fire that one up at 23:12.

If you like traditional music my favorite sound track is from "The Long Riders". Ry Cooder did most of it.

Not a real western but I've always loved the soundtrack from "The Last of the Mohicans".

I imagine I'm a little older than most of you guys, so to me, there's always been only one western theme. In more refined circles, it's known as the Finale to the overture of the opera William Tell by Rossini. Kids in the 50's knew it as the theme to The Lone Ranger. Still makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck when I hear the trumpet intro.

I like the acoustic guitar in the opening scene in Hud. Sadly not repeated during the rest of the movie. It sets a tone for the entire story.

Heh heh, Triggers rider wasmy top favorite. If you want a great CD set with many of huis songs--as well as Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, Sons fo the Pioneers and more--go to Rhino Music--and they sell a set called: Songs of the West--4-cd set and coes in a simulated leather binder and alsocomes with a book too.I picked this up back in 97-98? and love listening to the music. Their might be a 2nd set of these available? but I havent checked in awhile so cant say for sure? Anyway--the other is still available and I was told by Rhinos-owner--whom I met in 08 on the way to get surgery--said it was one of his best sellers.

Morricone has scored around five hundred movies and TV shows.

Listen sometime to the mix on YouTube of "Gabriel's Oboe" from "The Mission" and the main theme from "Cinema Paradiso". Gorgeous stuff.
