I don't see why you're ducking for cover. It's a gorgeous pistol and if you love it then you don't need any cover. I have an electrician who says to his customers, "If you like it then I love it". Should be the same way with guns. If you like it then I'm delighted, never mind my personal feelings about 1911s.

I wish you had said "nothing like a .45". THAT I can wrap my head around easily!

Enjoy your toy!

Purty Scott! Grashorns?

Mike,

Good eye! They are indeed Patrick's work. He had to make a base pair of stocks extra wide/thick (for my big mitts). He sent the unfinished pair to get a tracing of the Ed Brown Bobtail, and I sent them back to be finished out. They are a great pair example of his custom work.

The knife was a gift from my dad. He picked it up while on vacation in Italy.

I've also had a rekindling of interest in the 1911 lately. I've got two of them. I took them shooting a couple of months ago for the first time in over 20 years. Really enjoyable. While I've preferred DA guns for carry/self defense for several years now, I've been carrying one of them, a Series 80 Govt Model, around the house for several weeks. Surprisingly easy to carry for an all-steel gun, even in a crappy Uncle Mike's holster.

Of the two, though, my favorite is my 70 Series Gold Cup, worked over by King's Gun Works when they were still a reputable shop. Inherited from my dad, it has too much sentimental value for me to carry it, but it will be seeing some range time as ammo allows.

I've always been a sucker for two-tone 1911s.

The S80 frame was checkered by Kings and the hammer, trigger , beaver tail, and mainspring came from them.

Are they still in business?

Nope. I think they went to a parts-only business in the early 2000s, then went out of business altogether a few years later.

Favorite 45

Here are two of my favorite 45's, but since we're talking about non-S&W guns, ignore the top one in the photo. The bottom one is a Colt 1917. The condition is much nicer than the picture suggests. It's really cool to shoot a piece of history.

I don't own a 1911 (I know, I know), so my favorite 45 is my principal home defense gun, my FN FNX-45 Tactical. I chose it after a shoot-off with a 1.0 M&P 45 FS, and an HK 45. My FNX contains 16, count 'em, rounds of 45 goodness, is well-built, and has been very accurate and reliable over its 7,700 rounds. It works extremely well with the Venom Vortex red dot sight and it's fun to shoot. What's not to like?

I started off with a Colt 70 series Gold Cup. Had to sell it before moving out of NYC. Next up is a 1943 Ithaca 1911A1 when we did some swapping back many years ago. My last one is a Springfield Armory one that bascially has all the bells and whistles. That one has well north of 30,000 rounds through it. Still keeps trucking along. Frank

I prefer revolvers over semi-automatics, but when I do carry a semi-automatic, I prefer the 1911.:)

I would say I prefer revolvers to autos also. I down to 6 45's in the 1911 family (& a 38 Super Commander) and 3 Sig 220's. The DA and SA revolvers outnumber them. I keep full moon clips loaded by the hundred!

A friend once said "A 45 is too large to conceal." I sat next to him at Church the next week and warned him I would be carrying a 45. After church (and out of public eyes) he still couldn't locate the 45, I pulled up my sweater and showed him I had on 2 1911's and 2 220's and a spare mag for each! (two in a belly band , one OWB 3 o'clock, & one small of the back. It wasn't the most fun I've ever had at church, but it was doable!)

I am also a fan of the M1911 design. I have a few, some Colt's, some other brands. The 1911 fits my hand like a glove and the design is pretty simple. I can easily service and repair my 1911's... if anything ever breaks. They also lend themselves to customization very nicely.

I'm an old fashion, tried and true 1911 guy. Its my favorite pistol and I own a bunch of 'em. :D

This has been my EDC for over 20 years now. Its a 1959 Colt Commander with a few light mods. Had it refinished by Colt about 10 years ago. Still looks and shoots great!

Here are some of my other 1911s. Its an older picture. I've added a few more since this was taken.

Several years ago I asked a gun Forum (maybe it was here) to suggest the next gun to add to the following accumulation of vintage firearms:

Large revolver
Small revolver
Side by side shotgun
Hunting rifle
12 gauge riot pump shotgun
Single barrel trap gun

The suggestions that came back included:

M1 Garand
M1 Carbine
1911
Something in 22 LR

An M1 Garand did not interest me, an M1 Carbine does interest me but it's a "no go" as it's a felony in my state, and I once had a 22 rifle and I sold it. However, all of the positive information on 1911's persuaded me, and the local gun shop had this 1943 Ithaca M1911A1:

For me, a WW2 1911 was an excellent round-off to my accumulation.
